Please Recommend More Classical & Violin/Viola/Cello Music CDs

I seccond this Oistrakh recommendation, Look for his Clair de Lune on YouTube…

For something in a rock structure, Gordon Withers just released an album that is Jawbox (a 90’s pop punk band) covers on cello and violin. The best part is the proceeds from the album supports Jawbox’s singer’s sons rare condition.

Have you considered getting her a chocolate violin to tide her over?

Skimmed the thread, didn’t see it. But I’d like to recommend the Emerson String Quartet’s version of Bach’s “Art of the Fugue”. It is a good string rendition of a (usually) keyboard-based work.

The Strad is a great magazine. What is sadly not available on the website is their violin-porn high-quality photography of top-class instruments.

Ok, I went on Amazon and made a few purchases for starters…some recommended by you Dopers and some I picked after listening to the samples…this by no means will be my final purchase, I will bookmark this thread for the future consideration on future purchases…so please…KEEP em’ COMING!

Wow…big purchase. This thread also has me interested in the Podger CD set.

Tell you what Cyberhwk…I’ll give my wife that set first to listen to and I’ll let you know how she likes it…from what we’ve seen here in this thread, it sounds like it’s a can’t miss. Some of the stuff should be delivered to our doorstep tomorrow. (I just checked: Podger’s CDs won’t be here until 4/1, so maybe I’ll give her the Paderewski or the Haskil & Grumiaux CDs that are in the first shipment.)

I was thinking that I would give her one item a week to listen to before I give her the next one.

Go figure…Joshua Bell’s “Romance of the Violin” and Yo-Yo Ma’s “Appassionato” arrived yesterday. I gave her the Joshua Bell CD first this morning by loading it on her Itunes in her business computer and then synced it to her Itouch to listen to at home. Her first impression when we fired it up was “Wow…he’s pretty good!” Translation: “That dude knows how to smoke the strings!”

Claude Lamothe is a fantastic cellist. I have his albums ‘nu’ and ‘cru’ and just noticed he’s got another called ‘vivace’
His live performances are an excellent blend of hard rock and classical styles, but so far his recordings have avoided the use of his electric cello.

You may always want to take a look at the Yoshido Brothers, who play shamisen.

By the way, another very important (and very enjoyable) violinist is Stéphane Grappelli, easily the best-known jazz violinist.

Shoot…SCORE!
