Here’s a little quiz you can take. (I picked my breed)
My next-door neighbor had one who was a sweet little doll. A little yappy whenever the doorbell rang, but friendly to everyone who came in.
She did, however, have issues with her eyes.
They came out.
You see, our shared backyard was surrounded by a chain-link fence, and one time she got excited over something and ran full-tilt right into the fence, and one of her eyeballs just… popped out. As you can probably tell, their eye sockets are kind of shallow, plus they don’t have big, impact-absorbing noses like most other dogs do, so it doesn’t take as much force to dislodge things. She ran around in a panic with one eye bouncing around until they caught her, but after a trip to the vet she seemed perfectly ok, and lived happily for many more years after that.
I noticed she stayed away from the fence after that.
That’s possible. My sister is also a vet tech (in a different clinic) in the same area (Arkansas) that I was, and they have similar problems with pugs. Not every pug we saw was awful, just maybe 75%. So don’t get one from Arkansas.
If you like the smashed face look, shit tzus and pekingeses also have that long hair that seems to shed a lot less, and both tend to be nice dogs.
Well, obviously she was keeping an eye out for it.
Our neighbor came by again yesterday (we’re near the community mailbox) and I brought the whole family out to see Dixie, her 8 week old pug. Man, that’s one incredibly personable, affectionate pup! She was climbing all over my daughter and then straining at her leash to cuddle some more when led away. She had the saddest little look on her face like “What, I can’t play with the girl some more?”
ITALIAN GREYHOUND
PUG
DACHSHUND (MINIATURE SMOOTH HAIRED)
BOSTON TERRIER
Hmmm…those are all ones I’ve thought about. Looks like the pug is not ruled out!
I must find out more about potential allergies. Of course my landlord (we share the fenced-in front yard) said her dog would kill another dog I brought in. Not might, would! So I guess a change in location would be required!
