Plot question about "The Hunt for Red October" (spoilers)

I was watching this movie tonight and I was wondering how they can hear the other submarine flooding their torpedo tubes? If this was such a problem for submarines, wouldn’t they just have the torpedo tubes flooded, already? They’re already underwater so it wouldn’t really be a problem.

Paging robby.

The end of the Cold War did make the plot about the cook a bit…er unfresh. In it the reason the cook was chosen was since the sub did not have a dedicated wardroom/meal area for the enlisted men and the berths were scattered all over. His presence in any compartment would not be thought unusual. Clancy even notes with derision the lack of amenities on board.

The end of the Cold War resulted in film crews being permitted to see the inside of the Boats and it turn out the Typhoons are basically luxury submarines.
They have a sauna, a gym, a swimming pool, a common area with birdcages., and yes an excellent eating area.
No way would the cook be able to explain his snooping away.

Channing Idaho Banks, your question (about torpedo tubes) is completely unrelated to the topic of this thread (the cook). Just because they both fit under the same title doesn’t mean they’re the same topic. You could have just as well started a completely new thread, rather than zombifying an old one.

It was very true for WWII submarines and I assume it’s still true to some degree that exposure to salt water for extended times (hours in WWII) would require the torpedos to be serviced.
I assume even today they are not designed to be submerged in salt water for weeks/months of a deployment.

And, while I am no fan of Alec Baldwin, he played Ryan so well that I can’t see anyone else, not even Harrison Ford, in the role.
