Plot to kidnap (MI Gov) Gretchen Whitmer

Welcome to democracy!

Didn’t Sheriff Arpaio do that too?

Yes, and one thing I did notice on the cite from El_Kabon is that more than just inappropriate comments from the Sheriff justifying the would be kidnappers are there between them and the Sheriff.

In California larger counties, we absolutely need elected Sheriffs. But yeah, in podunk areas you get some losers.

For the moment, I am glad I live in this country - it could be worse. But I do not like the direction the U.S. has been gong in, so much so that I literally just scheduled a consultation with a Canadian immigration lawyer for my dad and aunt. Their mother was born in Canada, and to make a very long story short, it’s going to be a challenge to prove that the person on her Canadian birth certificate is the same person that gave birth to them. But Dad just turned 80, and if it’s at all feasible, a) I want to get him a Canadian passport while he’s still around, and b) I want to know if it gives me a Plan B. Because I never really thought until now that a Plan B would be useful to me, but now I am starting to think it wouldn’t be a bad idea.

New Jersey is not Michigan. According to the wiki article on Gun Laws in Michigan, peaceful open carry of firearms is legal. Going to the Capitol to protest government policies is clearly protected by the 1st Amendment. There does not appear to be any law against carrying firearms into the Capitol, and it is arguably in that case a combined exercise of free speech and right to bear arms, so I would think constitutionally protected.

"The commission could face additional obstacles when it comes to regulating special deputies appointed by county sheriff’s offices.

Local sheriffs are constitutional officers, and according to Bourgeois, any volunteers a local sheriff appoints might not fall under the purview of state commission’s authority."

It goes on to say that the commission is trying to get an answer to that question. So where do they get this idea of “constitutional officer?” Is it just bandying about the word “constitution” because it is a trigger word? Aren’t ALL elected officials “constitutional” by the same measure? Or am I missing something?

This is a good read

It’s called the “constitutional sheriff” movement. . . Its animating idea is that a sheriff holds ultimate law-enforcement authority in his county—outranking even the federal government within its borders. Though the movement claims deep history in English law, its real roots lie in the more recent fringes of American right-wing thought.
. . .
The Constitutional Sheriffs claim to be supported by long tradition, but in fact sheriff supremacy is based on a faulty reading of history. Where states’ rights has some support in the text and history of the Constitution (notably in the 10th Amendment, but limited by the Reconstruction Amendments), the idea of sheriff supremacy does not: It has been made up by stitching together random references to sheriffs and militias in our political and legal texts. It relies on a highly selective reading of history, pretending that the high sheriff of the English shire was transplanted to colonial America, and then somehow emerged in the present day untouched by legal developments over the past 200 years.

Ha! simulpost with asahi

There are other articles (newer ones) about this topic, but local law enforcement is, with increasing frequency, crossing over into a more participatory role in some anti-fed and other right wing movements.

This old Politico article makes reference to Arpaio, but other law enforcement officials have been involved throughout the country.

I’m fine with a healthy degree of tension between local and fed officials over jurisdiction - perfectly natural in a dual-federal system. But some locals are assuming outsized roles, and in the case of Arpaio and ex Sheriff Clark of Milwaukee, they’re cultivating cult of personality type regimes, which if they were to countenance militias would be really problematic.

At least, until Blacks start doing it.

Amen.

I’m assuming you forgot the /Sarcasm tag?

Do I want to know the first?

A long gone idiot claimed that the OKC bombing wasn’t an unreasonable thing to do.

I’ve got my conspiracy theory hat on, and I’m thinking the esteemed Sheriff Dar Leaf may be an FBI informant.

Because back in 2014, the FBI executed a big-assed raid on the Barry County sheriff’s office, and Leaf in particular. It was in regards to a case of suspected benefit fraud. In 2008, a sheriff’s deputy was killed in a motor vehicle accident. The sheriff’s office claimed he was on duty, undercover, at the time and he was drawing benefits based on his being killed in the line of duty. But I guess there were questions about whether or not he really was killed in the line of duty.

Maybe there really is nothing to see here. Maybe the FBI really did decide to come in guns blazing on a 6 year old case of low level fraud, nothing systemic, just one lie told to benefit a widow and her children. Then maybe after they did that, they really did say “Whoops, nothing to see here - and then they walked away and dropped it for forever.

Or maybe they needed to get someone inside of one of these groups and looked for a possible crime they could leverage. I’m not saying that’s what they did here, but it is a time-honored federal law enforcement technique -and something about threatening to make trouble for a law enforcement widow and her kids seems very FBI.

I probably just have too much time in my hands, but I found this interesting,

I think John Doe #2 was probably a real person (and a reasonably accurate drawing) who did assist McVeigh and Nichols. Where does that rank?

Virginia Gov. Northam was another planned victim of this plot. CNN article.

Of course he was.

A letter in yesterday’s Chicago Tribune said something to the effect of, If you’re going to blame Trump for the plot to kidnap Michigan’s governor, then you have to blame Mayor Lightfoot and other Dems for all the riots and looting.

:man_facepalming: :man_facepalming: :man_facepalming:

Fine – show me a tweet where any Dem leader said something like BURN KENOSHA and I’ll agree with you.

But RW media has told them that’s what was done and they believe it. Of course the Lying Liars of the Left would deny it. So it must be True!!
