Someone has written an email to remind me that the Rabbit was usually called “Bun.” And that there were versions of “Good King Saurkraut” that involved “Good King Winkelhof” … including (this from memory) someone singing “Good King Saurkraut, look out!..” and being interrupted: “Saurkraut? Winklehof, Winklehof is king!” To which the singer replies, “What?! Good King Saurkraut is dead? I din’t even know he was sick!”
I have to say, over the last 30 years, I have often wondered what Walt Kelly would have done with [fill in your favorite political goof-up] … and lamenting that we won’t ever see it.

Question: Aren’t the lyrics from those comics covered by copyright? Does it violate the copyright to reprint them in whole in the staff report?

The lyrics are only a small part of the book in which they’re published – it’s usually not the entire content of a entire daily strip, there’s other stuff around it, so (I ain’t no lawyer) I assume that fair usage would apply to the book, rather than to a few panels in one specific strip. However, it’s an interesting point, and I’ll check into it. Thanks.
