Police officer taking pictures of my house

Yep, my Wife and I do smoke a little MJ while playing chess. Perfectly legal though. We where playing chess and having a beer. My Wife in a Pink Floyd sweat shirt. That’s also legal

I donno though. Would anyone want the Police taking pictures of your house to send to your insurance company? Ummm… What?

In some jurisdictions around here, the police/sheriff/fire department officers keep their cars 24/7. In some areas it’s been going on since 1977.

The program allows qualified police officers and supervisors to use their patrol cars during off-duty
hours to conduct personal business thereby increasing visibility of the County Police, or police in
general. However, each participating officer is required to monitor radio calls when the vehicle is in use and to respond to emergency calls-for-service or assistance. The objectives of the program are: (1) to increase the visibility of marked patrol cars as a deterrent to crime and create more contacts with the public; (2) to improve response time to crimes-in-progress thereby increasing the apprehension of offenders; (3) to provide prompt availability of equipment when mobilizing police officers in the event of an emergency or disaster; (4) to eliminate use of on-duty or overtime for obtaining gas/oil, minor repairs, and maintenance of the personal patrol cars; (5) to increase the life expectancy and trade-in value of the cars and reduce maintenance costs; and (6) to provide greater flexibility in the assignment of police officers for special events and programs. The precinct captains were appointed as the official responsible for administering/assigning the personal patrol cars.

If the LEO had such authorization and was on his own time (the OP said it was 6:30 p.m.) then there’s nothing really wrong with it.

Disagree. A LEO or any stripe coming to sell girl scout cookies is not good. If you’re in your uniform, and driving a LEO vehicle, it should be official LEO business.

It’s a little different to have a Girl Scout walk to your door, and a Cop.

That’s not an issue taking a company car home. I would push back against using it as a second vehicle for the family to make use of during off hours.

My dad had a company car he took home every day but under no circumstances was he able to run family errands, pick up kids or drive to church in it.

A cop using his police vehicle to moonlight at a second job, not appropriate, probably in violation of their employment.

And, as mentioned upthread, are they reporting a taxable benefit to the IRS?

He wasn’t mowing a lawn though. He was helping his wife quick. It wouldn’t have bothered me one bit, but then again, my dad was a cop. I don’t see the big deal.

Of course you don’t. Unqualified impunity!

I had a somewhat similar situation many years ago when I owned some gas stations. A firefighter showed up at one of my stores in the middle of the day, driving an official department pickup. He parked it right across the front doors and came in wearing his uniform. He tried to tell me that his car had engine trouble and his mechanic had told him that there was water in the gas he had bought at my store, so he wanted me to pay his $1,500 repair bill.

He did this right in front of customers, so I was more than a little pissed off. I told him my tanks had water detectors that printed out a report every morning. We also manually checked the tanks for water every morning. We also sold tens of thousands gallons of gas/diesel every day and nobody else had any problems. So, no, I wasn’t going to pay his repair bill. I also told him I was pissed that he showed up in an official vehicle and clothing for a problem with his private vehicle. Especially since fire departments do safety checks every year and can close a station down.

He made a bunch of noise about suing me and then left. I was on the phone to the fire chief before he even drove out of the parking lot. The chief understood my reasoning and said he would take care of it. I never heard another word about it.

Pissed me off for days.
