Poll about untying your shoe laces

Ditto. (except the state, of course) And as you can guess from this thread http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=174535&highlight=shoes buying shoes any sooner than absolutely necessary is not something I’d enjoy. Besides, the few times I’ve tried taking them off tied, it hurt the tops of my feet as I did it. They’d have to be pretty loosely tied in the first place for it to be more comfortable, then they’d feel floppy while you were wearing them. Floppy shoes ::shudder::

I’m male from California. Well actually on the East Coast right now, but my roots are from sunny Cali. If my shoes are nice and new, I’ll untie them before taking them off to keep the wear and tear from getting too bad. After a while though, when they got ugly and lose their stiffness, I’ll just tie them loosly and walk around with floppy shoes. Floppy shoes are good! You can do an air kick and they go flying off.

Depends entirely on the shoes. If they are worn-in sneakers, and I am not going to be running or otherwise attempting to sprain my ankles, then they remain tied loosely, so I can slip them on or off with ease.

Any other situation, I go through the trouble to tie and untie.

Most of the shoes I buy are laceless- ie. dress shoes with a buckle instead of laces. Once I was old enough that my feet stopped growing, I stopped untying my laces.

Always tied

Male, 21 years old, lived in NE USA entire life.

Never untie my shoes when taking off or putting on, and I never will.

Occaisonally, I re-tie them when they come loose, and it takes forever to get them the right tightnes to allow for easy take off.

Another male from the USA checking in. I used to untie and retie my shoes all the time, but I’ve recently gotten into a phase where I’m basically tying my shoes about once every two weeks or so. I haven’t noticed any advanced destruction of the shoe; seems to work nicely.

I remove my shoes without untying, but I cannot slip my feet back again, so everytime when I put on my shoes I have to untie and then redo the knot.

I’m male, btw.

My answer is the exact same as Twickster’s.

The only shoes I wear regularly that tie are my battered old combat boots, which are too tall to be taken off without untying. My main sneaker-type shoes are Land’s End All-Weather Mocs which have no laces, and most of the year I wear sandals.

However, when I wear shoes that are laced and low enough to take off without unlacing, I generally unlace 'em anyway. Female, Los Angeles.

Always untie and for some reason it irks me when people don’t.
Touch of OCD probably. Just seems like you can’t have a snug fit it you don’t untie. I dunno.

It’s been years since my sneakers were untied. I have to untie boots because I couldn’t get them off my feet otherwise, but if I could they would also be tied. I prefer slip on shoes to tie shoes anyway, so it lets me feel like they’re slip on with the comfort and stability of a sneaker.

Same here.

What are these “sneakers” things y’all speak of?

::: searches through closet: high heeled boots, pumps, strappy sandals…eh, no “sneakers” :::

OK, I leave them tied to take off, untie to put back on…and they’re “athletic shoes.”

Once I have broken in a new pair of shoes I never bother untying them. By this time they are strached out enough that they can just slip on. I’m too impatient and usually in too much of a hurry to bother with tying and untying my shoes every time I leave the house or come home.

I used to untie them every night when I took them off and retie them every day when I put them on. Then I noticed that my 15 year old son just pulls his shoes off and puts them on without touching his laces. I asked him and he told me to just tie them loosely. I have done it since and just slip my shoes on and off without touching the laces.

Male, Pennsylvania (US). My old sneakers that I wear like heavy-duty slippers haven’t been tied or untied in months. The sneakers I wear when I’m going outdoors (meaning I haven’t worn through the soles yet  ) usually get untied when I put them on, not when I take them off. Ditto for work shoes.

Rarely untie any shoes. I like my shoes to fit loosely anyway, so I don’t bother to untie/retie. The only exception is when I play basketball. I will tighten down the laces before a game then re-tie more loosely afterward.

In the morning, I untie shoe, insert foot, and retie. Yep, I said “Morning”. It’s really painful to wear shoes now, so when my shoes come off, I don’t put them back on without a fuss. Woe unto thee if you force me to put my shoes back on. Woe, I say!

Untie when I take them off, retie when I put them back on. I figure the laces are there for a reason. One exception, if it’s a loafer, I don’t bother to untie them. :stuck_out_tongue:
