Dopers, do you expect your marriage will end only when one of you dies? This question occurred to me on reading the happily married poll. ---

Unless one of us loses our mind and does something totally out of character and utterly unforgivable, yes, " 'til death" applies. (and now I’m going off to knock on wood, throw salt over my shoulder, and do a few other penances for tempting fate. I feel like I’ve just jinxed myself!) ---

We’re legally separated, and the divorce will be final Dec 31 this year. So, yeah, it’s very likely our marriage will end before death. ---

I totally misunderstood the OP. I thought it was asking, “Do you consider a marriage as coming to an end when one partner dies, or do you somehow perceive the marriage as continuing in some spiritual or emotional way – the widow(er) maintaining such a strong memory of their dearly departed that, for example, he/she would never contemplate remarrying or even dating someone ever again.” I voted “yes” (it does end when one partner dies), and was relieved to see that most Dopers agreed with me. Now I understand the OP’s intent. Luckily, my answer is the same. ---

Yes. We’ll be together until the end of our days. After 32 years, we’re still deeply in love and constantly affectionate and we’re about as comfortable with each other as any two people can be. ---
