Poll: Do you get drunk?

What on earth is the point of that? To make sure everyone knows you are too cool to drink pedestrian beer?

What an odd thing to be a snob about.

Sure, once in awhile. But I rarely drink with the express intent of getting drunk, which I define as some sort of noticeable impairment - becoming more talkative, slurring words, lack of coordination, general goofiness. It can be fun, but it’s not usually something I plan on doing or look forward to all day. It’s more of a spur-of-the moment thing: “Man, this has been a rough week - let’s grab a beer!” And if I’m having fun, I might have 2 or 3. However, I have kind of a built-in aversion to anything after that. I get tired of whatever I’m drinking and really start craving water or diet soda or something.

I’ve only a few times gotten really blotto, which I would define as barely coherent, becoming attracted to people I shouldn’t be, not being able to “snap out of it” and behave normally if needed, and/or getting sick. That has happened because I was being careless - or willfully negligent - and I hope never to experience that again in my life. I don’t understand the motivation - other than alcoholism - to drink to that point regularly, on purpose!

I don’t subscribe to the notion that “the only point of drinking is getting drunk.” To me, the point of drinking is that you enjoy drinking it. Sure, getting buzzed can be part of that - like how “waking up” is a reason to have a cup of coffee - but why should that have any more weight than the taste, or the occasion, or the food you are eating? That’s why I don’t get people choking down crap beer or something just because it’s the only alcohol available, or all you can afford. It should at least be an enjoyable experience…but I guess I’m weird like that.

I got drunk at parties several times back when I was in college – more than twenty years ago. But pretty much not at all since then. I never really enjoyed it all that much, and I tended to hang around with teetotallers all these years after college. Nowadays I rarely drink alcohol at all. Maybe a glass of beer once every few months. My wife doesn’t drink at all – alchohol makes her physically sick.
