Assuming that there is to be some sort of state-recognised formal union for homosexual couples, with similar legal status to current heterosexual marriage… 1: Do you wish it to be described by a term other than ‘marriage’ 2: Are you heterosexual yourself? If ‘yes’ to both, please summarise your reasons for wanting a new term; try to be as brief as possible (ideally no more words than you could speak with one breath!). Please don’t turn this thread into a debate; there exists [another thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?&threadid=208548) specifically for that purpose. ---

Homosexual marriages are already legal in my country, and they do not have different terminology. I can get married to a guy or a girl over here, and the paperwork will look just the same. Apart from the term “gay marriage” often used in the press, there is no official difference. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Straight male, BTW. ---

Default := no,yes With the caveat that if there was a general concensus amongst gay couples that they’d prefer another term, I’d use the other term. ---

1 - no 2 - yes We should just have a nice legalese term for it that applies to everyone, so there’s less emotion involved overall. (we probably already do, but I can’t quite come up with it) ---

1.) A most emphatic **No**. 2.) Not quite. (This isn’t a binary, you know.) But I am faithfully married to someone of the opposite gender. The idea of separate terminology is as offensive to me as a separate drinking fountain. They may come from the same main and run as cold, but that hardly makes much difference when you have to hide behind a column just to have a sip of water. ---

1. I wish we’d reserve the term “marriage” entirely for the religious ceremony and come up with an completely distinct term for the civil union between two people (maybe something like “civil union”) 2. Yes ---
