Poll: Dopers' Grandparents

I’m 30. My maternal grandmother is still alive. She’s 86. My maternal grandfather died a month before I was born. My paternal grandmother died when I was 7. My paternal grandfather died when I was 12. My paternal step-grandmother died when I was 17.

A. I’m 28
B. Both my grandmothers are still living. One is 88 and the other is 82.
C. I lost one grandfather when I was 11. He was 80 and had a heart attack. The other died when I was 14. He was 76. He had Parkinson’s Disease and died from complications of pneumonia. I also had one set of great-grandparents alive during my lifetime. I was pretty young when great-grandma died , not sure how old exactly. I remember visiting her in the nursing home. Great-grandpa died when I was 15, I think. He was 96.

I’m 38, with no living grandparents.

Maternal grandfather died 1981 (age 77; I was 13)
Paternal grandfather died 1985 (age 79; I was 17)
Maternal grandmother died 2001 (age 89; I was 33)
Paternal grandmother died 2001 (age 93; I was 34)

I’m 34.

Paternal grandfather died in '97, maternal grandmother in '01, maternal grandfather in '04. My maternal grandmother is still alive.

For a while, my son had more living great grandparents (5) than living grandparents (3). Granted, that only lasted about 18 months, but I still thought it was very unusual.

A. How old are you?
23

B. Are any of your grandparents alive? (if so, which?)
Yes, both of my grandmas! My Saskatchewan Grandma is 91 and my German Oma is 90.

C. If they’re not, how old were you when they died?
I never met my Opa, and my Saskatchewan grandpa died when I was 9.

Actually, he’s 5 now, and, come to think of it, the GGp to Gp total is still favoring the GGp. He’s got 3 living great grandmothers, and two living grandparents (both of my parents are deceased).

Twofer: I’ll answer for both myself and my daughter (for my son, subtract 2).

No bio grandparents still living, but my grandmother-in-law is still alive at 99 (she turns 100 in a couple of weeks). It’s kind of cool being a granddaughter and a grandmother at the same time.

My maternal gmother died when I was 19
My maternal gfather died when I was 20

c) My maternal grandfather died in 1998, I think, and I believe he was 89. Both paternal grandparents and my maternal grandmother died before I was hatched. The woman I knew as “grandma” was my grandfather’s second wife, and she passed away a few years after he did.

I should amend that claim to be the youngest here without any grandparents - I missed Mississippienne’s post.

I’m the youngest of six, and my mother is one of the later children out of 12 and my father was one of the later children out of 11. It’s a wonder their parents lasted as long as they did!

I am 23. I have one grandmother who is still alive. My other grandparents died, if I recall correctly, when I was 7, 9, and 22.

A. 28
B. Both grandmothers living, both grandfathers dead.
