I went on a tour of a salt mine once and the tour guide at one point invited us to lick the wall. I was the only person who partook, does that count? It was tasty, but for the rest of the tour dumbasses kept asking me what it tasted like. ---

Salt licks can inhibit your sex life! It may be a regional thing, but taverns hereabouts almost always have a cone of white chalk on the bar for folks to powder up their hands for pool. I was introducing a new girlfriend to all my haunts many years ago and she inquired about the white cones. “Salt licks”, sez I, explaining that tavern owners learned long ago that salt consumption increased beer sales. Some fancier places put out salted peanuts or pretzels but around here, most folks just put out salt licks. After that she’d point out the “salt lick” in every tavern we visited, to my amusement. I guess I was hoping that she’d go up and take a tiny lick and discover my ruse, but she never did. A few months later her folks came for a visit and she explained about the salt licks to her worldly and far more skeptical father, who pointed out the real use of the things. Whoo-wee, I didn’t get any for awhile after that. ---

Sure. Once in childhood, out in the pasture, right in the dent made from the cows licking it. It’s not all saliva-y. It’s SALT, right? The salt dries up all the slobber. And presumably killed any germs, too. Some people prefer field corn to sweet corn. And up to the knees in cow shit, redolent of hay, isn’t nearly as bad as falling flat on your face in chicken shit, reeking of ammonia. ---

Yes, both the big block cow kind (new), circular rabbit size (new), and the salt pellets for water softeners. They were pretty salty. ---

Yup. A new one, though, not a horse slobbered one. My mom and sis are both horse fanatics and I grew up around them (the horses and my mom and sis :D).
