1. “Klaatu barada nikto” or “May the Force be with you”

1. “Klaatu barada nikto” or **“May the Force be with you”** - from the kid who saw Star Wars in '77

2. **Slim Elvis** or Fat Elvis - more about his age, I think. He was pretty fine looking as a young man

3. \*\*A Whiter Shade of Pale \*\* or The Dark Side of the Moon - just because

4. Don’t Tread On Me or One Nation Under God - neither. I’ll take “peace, order and good government” thanks.

5. “Waiter, there’s a fly in my soup!” or “Do you have Prince Albert in a can?” - neither I don’t like stupid comedy.

6. Rule Britannia or \*\*Pomp and Circumstance \*\*

7. Bill Clinton or **Jimmy Carter** - far more statesmanlike

8. **Oxford** or Cambridge - Harriet Vane taught there

9. \*\*The Iliad \*\* or The Odyssey - if I were Penelope I wouldn’t have been waiting for him to come home.

10. “A thing must have an identity before it can exist” or **"A thing must exist before it can have an identity"**

11. \*\*Edgar Alan Poe \*\* or Ralph Waldo Emerson - I really like The Tell-tale Heart

12. “Even the inner and sensible intuition of our mind (as object of consciousness) which is represented as being determined by the succession of different states in time, is not the self proper, as it exists in itself — that is, is not the transcendental subject — but only an appearance that has been given to the sensibility of this, to us unknown, being.” (Kant)

or

**"Something unknown is doing we don’t know what." (Eddington)** I’m going with the not blah blah blah choice

1. \*\*Twenty minutes of bagpipes \*\* or Two minutes of stomach cramps - not much of a dilemma for me, I adore the bagpipes

2. Judo or **Karate**

3. Bing Crosby or **Patsy Cline** - for Crazy

4. Mr. Burns or **Mr. Spacely** - he has sprockets!

5. **Mahatma Gandhi** or Nelson Mandela

6. Rice or **Pasta** - though either will do nicely

7. Lettuce tomato and mayonnaise or Chili mustard and slaw

1. “Klaatu barada nikto” or “May the Force be with you” \*\*“Klaatu barada nikto”, \*\* a great movie and a better message.

2. Slim Elvis or Fat Elvis \*\*Slim Elvis \*\* changed the country and music, Fat Elvis was just a strange dude living off slim’s success.

3. A Whiter Shade of Pale or The Dark Side of the Moon\*\* The Dark Side of the Moon \*\* is one of the best albums of all time. A Whiter Shade of Pale is a very good song.

4. Don’t Tread On Me or One Nation Under God
I like the attitude of \*\*Don’t Tread On Me \*\* and I am not much on God anyway.

5. Bill Clinton or Jimmy Carter \*\*Clinton \*\* was the better President and Carter the better man. So for President I will pick Clinton.

9. Twenty minutes of bagpipes or Two minutes of stomach cramps \*\*Twenty minutes of bagpipes \*\* or even 2 hours of the Chieftains can be incredible.

Missed the second one, but…

1. **"Klaatu barada nikto"** or “May the Force be with you” - More interesting source story.

2. **Slim Elvis** or Fat Elvis - Vegas is the ruination of anyone.

3. A Whiter Shade of Pale or **The Dark Side of the Moon** - Much better album, overall.

4. **Don’t Tread On Me** or One Nation Under God - Anything with snakes is good.

5. **"Waiter, there’s a fly in my soup!"** or “Do you have Prince Albert in a can?” - More flexible and varied punchlines.

6. **Rule Britannia** or Pomp and Circumstance - Pomp and Circumstances annoys me slightly more.

7. Bill Clinton or **Jimmy Carter** - Worse president, better human being.

8. Oxford or **Cambridge** - Better university press selections ( for me ).

9. **The Iliad** or The Odyssey - More political.

10. “A thing must have an identity before it can exist” or **“A thing must exist before it can have an identity”** - identities are malleable, existence is not.

11. **Edgar Alan Poe** or Ralph Waldo Emerson - Dank beats tranquility in literature, if not in real life.

12. NA

13. **Twenty minutes of bagpipes** or Two minutes of stomach cramps - I like bagpipes.

14. **Judo** or Karate - More effective when you get down to it.

15. Bing Crosby or **Patsy Cline** - Never a fan of Bing.

16. **Mr. Burns** or Mr. Spacely - Burns is at least interesting in his evil. Spacely is just a screamer.

17. **Mahatma Gandhi** or Nelson Mandela - Tough call on this one. But Gandhi was far more the phenomenon.

18. Rice or **Pasta** - Even tougher call. Virtual tie, but pasta by a hair.

19. **Lettuce tomato and mayonnaise** or Chili mustard and slaw - Easy. I loathe slaw.

Bonus Question: Which is more important — how or **why**?

1. “Klaatu barada nikto” (It’s more obscure and less overdone)

2. Fat Elvis (not much of an opinion either way, so I went with identifying with the fat)

3. A Whiter Shade of Pale (definitely - even more since I heard the mushrooms singing it)

4. Don’t Tread On Me

5. “Waiter, there’s a fly in my soup!” (more variations available)

6. Pomp and Circumstance (it took me forever to graduate - I still tear up)

7. Jimmy Carter

8. Cambridge (for no particular reason - although I think that was were the ficticious St. Ced’s College was located)

9. The Odyssey (I’m between Sylla and Charybdis on this one)

10. “A thing must exist before it can have an identity” (but then, I’m and engineer)

11. Edgar Alan Poe

12. “Something unknown is doing we don’t know what.” (Eddington) (Or “The self is a construct of X region of the brain”)

13. Twenty minutes of bagpipes (I have more than one Christmas Bagpipe tape)

14. Karate (more familiar)

15. Bing Crosby (White Christmas)

16. Mr. Burns (has better lines)

17. Mahatma Gandhi (dead long enough to be mythical)

18. Pasta (today - I make no claims about other days)

19. Lettuce tomato and mayonnaise (yum vs appaled)

1. “Klaatu barada nikto” or “May the Force be with you” – May the Force be with you. I love Star Wars.

2. Slim Elvis or Fat Elvis. Slim Elvis. Sexyyyy!

3. A Whiter Shade of Pale or The Dark Side of the Moon – A Whiter Shade of Pale. I know that one.

4. Don’t Tread On Me or One Nation Under God – Don’t tread on me. I believe in God _and_ separation of church and state.

5. “Waiter, there’s a fly in my soup!” or “Do you have Prince Albert in a can?” Waiter, there’s a fly in my soup. I hate stupid prank phone calls.

6. Rule Britannia or Pomp and Circumstance – Pomp and Circumstance. It’s my favorite segment of Fantasia 2000.

7. Bill Clinton or Jimmy Carter – Jimmy Carter. He only lusted in his heart.

8. Oxford or Cambridge – Cambridge. I’ve been there.

9. The Iliad or The Odyssey – The Odyssey. It’s less of a war story.

10. “A thing must have an identity before it can exist” or “A thing must exist before it can have an identity” – “A thing must have an identity before it can exist”. I’ve had some bad experiences with existentialism.

11. Edgar Alan Poe or Ralph Waldo Emerson – Poe. Spooky, man.

12. “Even the inner and sensible intuition of our mind (as object of consciousness) which is represented as being determined by the succession of different states in time, is not the self proper, as it exists in itself — that is, is not the transcendental subject — but only an appearance that has been given to the sensibility of this, to us unknown, being.” (Kant)

or

“Something unknown is doing we don’t know what.” (Eddington) – ???

1. Twenty minutes of bagpipes or Two minutes of stomach cramps – Twenty minutes of bagpipes. On a hill in Scotland playing Amazing Grace, they can be sublime.

2. Judo or Karate – Judo. Somehow karate seems more violent to me (may just be an impression from the movies).

3. Bing Crosby or Patsy Cline. Patsy. Bing always seemed kind of creepy to me, and I don’t really enjoy his voice.

4. Mr. Burns or Mr. Spacely. Mr. Spacely. I like the Jetsons.

5. Mahatma Gandhi or Nelson Mandela – Gandhi. Non-violence.

6. Rice or Pasta. I’ll go with pasta, because I could have orzo too.

7. Lettuce tomato and mayonnaise or Chili mustard and slaw. Lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise. Three of the five things I order on my Subway sandwich every day (the other two are pickles and olives).

Bonus Question: Which is more important — how or why? How. Just do it.
This is the final poll in a three part series.
(Note to the posters who posted after Poll II closed: I have included your responses.)
Whoops! That one seemed to vanish fast. I missed it.

===================================

1. “Klaatu barada nikto” or “ **May the Force be with you** ”
I think I saw the first movie once and liked it but I like that some people are drawn to the spiritual message they perceive in the Lucas series.

2. **Slim Elvis** or Fat Elvis
I’d see his movies on TV when I was little and thought he was kinda cute. My tastes have changed since.

3. A Whiter Shade of Pale or **The Dark Side of the Moon** Best listened to in the dark.

4. Don’t Tread On Me or One Nation Under God Don’t Tread On Me or One Nation Under God
- neither. I’ll take “peace, order and good government” thanks.
I’m with **PastAllReason**

1. “Waiter, there’s a fly in my soup!” or “ **Do you have Prince Albert in a can**?” Cool cans. Meh to the ‘joke’.

2. **Rule Britannia** or Pomp and Circumstance
It’s just so handlebar-moustachey.

3. **Bill Clinton** or Jimmy Carter
Really tough choice. I’m picking Bill because I like the way he’s running his current project but think both are a real gift to the planet.

4. Oxford or Cambridge
Neither generates any particular feeling.

5. The Iliad or The **Odyssey**
I overdosed on mythology when I was a pre-teen. Just have no interest in it any more.
I picked _Odyssey_ because it’s mellifluous.

6. “ **A thing must have an identity before it can exist** ” or “A thing must exist before it can have an identity”
It’s about the metaphysical.

7. Edgar Alan Poe or **Ralph Waldo Emerson**
This one’s for you, mom.

8. “Even the inner and sensible intuition of our mind (as object of consciousness) which is represented as being determined by the succession of different states in time, is not the self proper, as it exists in itself — that is, is not the transcendental subject — but only an appearance that has been given to the sensibility of this, to us unknown, being.” ( **Kant** )
Delicious. And a fond remembrance of philosophy club back in Cowgary.

or

“Something unknown is doing we don’t know what.” (Eddington)

1. **Twenty minutes of bagpipes** or Two minutes of stomach cramps
Massed bands: Amazing Grace. Exquisite.

2. Judo or **Karate**
No real feeling for either. I’m going with appearance and sound (of the word).

3. **Bing Crosby** or Patsy Cline
Country music = eeeew.

4. Mr. Burns or **Mr. Spacely**
So. Tired. of Simpsons.

5. **Mahatma Gandhi** or Nelson Mandela
Almost as hard a choice as 7. I’ll go with Gandhi as homage.

6. Rice or **Pasta**
Good so many ways. And Gnocchi Alfredo at the Ritz - heaven.

7. **Lettuce tomato and mayonnaise** or Chili mustard and slaw
But please any lettuce but iceberg, which makes me sick.

Bonus Question: Which is more important — how or **why**?
But the poll seems so self explanatory. There’s more to the poll than meets the eye? What could that be, is it part of a class project like the recent one on smoking?
It’s just that I have a reason for doing it is all. It’s a selfish reason and won’t make me any money, but still…
