Poll on the SDMB community.

The Horror of Blimps. Though I had heard of Cecil previously, and read a few of his columns now and then in various publications.

Intellectual humor, mostly. Though I also value the site for predigestion of the massive amounts of information online.

How important is the site to you?

[quote]
I enjoy it a lot, but I can live without it. How’s that for vague?

I plead the 5th.

A message board can only “live up” to whatever the individual participants “live up” to. Some posters are very good and fighting ignorance. Some posters are very good and clinging to ignorance with tooth and nail.

I like the style of the Cecil columns, and I think having them around as constant reminders and examples helps keep things moving in the right direction.

Michigan Women’s Music Festival

Sometimes I start with General Questions and work my way down, but mostly I start with The Pit and work my way up. Whether or not I make it through all of the forums depends on if I get distracted, be it by posting or whathaveyou.

I lurk and post equally in whatever forum I happen to be reading, but do spend more time in some forums compared to others. I tend to favor MPSIMS and The Pit.

I do enjoy debating but to do so on par with the die-hard GD crowd, it requires a level of research and documenation that I don’t often have sufficient time to devote. There are certain pet topics of mine that I can quickly produce cites for, but they aren’t commonly discussed.

Tolerated. And yes, it does eerily correspond.

Probably a little too honestly.

Nope. I’m often dubbed as “Most authentic” by the participants of various gatherings of online communities I’ve taken part in in my life.

I’d say I agree most of the time, but I’m willing to admit I might just notice the agreements more. I don’t pick favorites when it comes to subjects, so that applies to all subjects.

Not that I can think of.

I don’t think of anyone as leaders. I think of the board population more like an amorphous amoeba. Sometimes a region will wander off following a few pseudopod folks one direction or another. Sometimes the whole thing is pulled apart by various regions all going different directions, but there are always topics that bring all of the blobs back together.

The list is too long to document, especially with a memory like mine. I tend to value the folks with level heads, a good sense of humor, and broad areas of thirsty curiosity or well-informed interest.

Not that I know of…

In and on the boards: yes. In general: No, not really, but it has never been my intention either. The boards are the extent of my interaction and knowledge.

Not important at all, because there is none.

Sure. No, I have not yet met anyone in real life that I met originally on the Dope.

For the record, I’m pleased to be among them.

Someone sent me an email to say that if I was going to comment, I should contribute as well, so here goes:

What first attracted you to the SDMB?

A link from a HK blog I used to read.

What do you keep coming back for?

To keep track of the posts I started and do vanity searches. Sometimes I want to quote some gem I shared here and forgot to save in my “Wisdom Shared With Dopers” folder.

How important is the site to you?How much time do you spend per week?day?

Very important; otherwise, why would I be typing this - checking that there are no typos, that every phrase is turned for maximal effect - at 10.26 on a Saturday morning at work, when I could be doing something useful like re-jigging my Fantasy Football team for the weekend’s matches or knocking off The Times crossword. Spend about half an hour a day 5 or 6 days a week. More if my vanity searches throw up a lot of fan feedback.

Do you think it lives up to its stated goal of “fighting ignorance”? How?

It’s a ridiculous motto. “None as blind as those who think they see” would be my suggestion.

What do you think sets the SDMB apart from other message boards?

Me, I suppose. Not a member of any others.

What other MBs do you go to?

n/a

Which forum do you go to first?

search>roger; then search>thornhill

Do you lurk more or participate more overall? in any particular forum? on any particular subject?

I pay good money not to listen to other people but to have a voice. As for particular forum, my motto is “have soapbox, will travel”. As for topic, I’m an “equal opportunity” truth-dispenser.

Do you enjoy debating, and do you think you hold your own there?

In GD? It’s getting a bit better, I suppose, but still rather sophomoric. I suppose I should spend more time there if I were more public-spirited.

Describe yourself - age, sex, location, occupation, etc. What interests do you have in real life?

Some say I look like Robert de Niro in his heyday, others say Gregory Peck of Big Country days. I work as company gwailo (“whitey”) for a large corporation in HK - speech-writing, drafting line-to-takes, writing reports, etc. “Propagandist” best conveys the nature of the work.

What do you see as your standing in the SDMB community? Does that correspond to your standing in real life?

The strong, silent type in both. WYSIWYG.

How honestly do you represent yourself online?

Too humble at times is the only complaint (though a common one) I’ve got so far.

Do you think people here would be surprised by what you are like in real life?

I always surprise people.

Do you find yourself agreeing or disagreeing more often with other members? On what subjects?

Usually they come round to my way of thinking eventually. Some pretend not to longer than others. I’m cool with that.

Are there any rules (official or not) that you disagree with?

Were there rules?

Who do you see as the leaders of the board?

Well, modesty checks me on this one. Those I feel have some leadership potential? AndyPolley, Excalibre, Tomndebb, if he could learn to foster his spirit of enquiry, Polycarp, until he rather lost his way over the gay messiah thing.

Who on the board do you most look up to? Why?

AndyPolley, cool personified, Campion, LA Law-style kick-ass litigator

Have you made enemies?

We are told to love our enemies and to pray for those who persectute us. I always feel a whole lot of love and prayer around here.

Do you feel like you know the other members well?

Do I feel like I’d want to?

How important is the anonymity of the board to you?

It’s not really that anonymous for me? I’m not so big on the whole privacy thing - too Stalinist for me.

Would you want to meet anyone here in real life? Have you?

I get offers, but I’ve turned them all down so far.

MALE, I said MALE!

But thanks :D.

Thanks, Cervaise. It was a pleasure meeting you as well :).

  • Tamerlane

Glad to help.

What first attracted you to the SDMB?

  1. That there were RESTRICTIONS on posters’ behavior 2. that were enforced.

It was the late 90’s, a time when about 99.99% of moderators were completely clueless about the whole not-letting-the-inmates-run-the-asylum thing, and as a result I couldn’t find a message board that wasn’t a flamer-infested chaotic hellhole to save my life. And then I hear of this place called The Straight Dope. Within three minutes, I was hooked.

What do you keep coming back for?
Strict rules which are consistently enforced. Oh, and some of the finest discussions I’ve ever seen on the Internet. Which is largely a product of rules which are consistently enforced. As well as banning, which virtually never happens on any other board. (Someday I’m going to write a short biography of the one person that was banned from DDRFreak.com.)

How important is the site to you?How much time do you spend per week?day?
Well, I wouldn’t call this site “important”, except in the sense of getting news and viewpoints that I wouldn’t find anywhere else. If the SDMB is unique in that aspect, it’s only because it actually throws the bums out instead of that lame half-baked “ignore them” nonsense that didn’t work for anyone in grade school and it sure as hell isn’t going to work now. Suffice to say that I’d be pretty bummed out if this site ceased to exist for any reason. I try to visit daily but don’t stay long unless I encounter a particularly riveting topic.

Do you think it lives up to its stated goal of “fighting ignorance”? How?
It does what it can. Sadly, it’s going to take a lot more than a website, no matter how intelligent, to fight ignorance. I do appreciate the chance to take a respite from the appalling ignorance pervading our mainstream culture (it’s gotten to the point where I can barely watch TV anymore).

What do you think sets the SDMB apart from other message boards?
See previous comments. Seriously, that’s all there is to it. Throw out the garbage, you have a quality board. Make a thousand and one excuses for there being garbage everywhere, everything goes to hell.

What other MBs do you go to?
Bemanistyle - Generally okay, although there’s a ton of that “fixed quote” crap and a general attitude of snarkiness and rudeness.
GameFAQs - This actually used to be one of the best message boards on the 'net, and it turned into a living hell virtually overnight. I still look once in a while out of curiosity, but there’s rarely anything good.
VJArmy - Fansite based around a scorekeeping service for Beatmania IIDX. Not much action, but some pretty fun discussions. Overall attitude is pretty peaceful.

Which forum do you go to first?
Depends. Usually Cafe Society.

Do you lurk more or participate more overall? in any particular forum? on any particular subject?
I used to post all the time; now, with work (and looking for work) and other pursuits, only occasionally. To be honest, I’m afraid of getting knocked around, especially for things I never dreamed would cause controversy (I got taken to task for claiming that the USSR was Communist. Swear to God.). I never post in Great Debates anymore…I’ve stuck my head in that hornet’s nest enough times, thank you very much. Other than that, I have no favorite forum.

Do you enjoy debating, and do you think you hold your own there?
NO. I swear on my sister’s soul that I will never, never, ever again get into a protracted debate on any message board. If I want to spend an inordinate amount of time driving myself into a frenzy, there’s always the Nordictrack.

Describe yourself - age, sex, location, occupation, etc. What interests do you have in real life?
31, male, Hawaii, recently got railroaded from an accounting position (don’t ask). Into video games, long walks, DVDs, comics, shopping, fanfic writing, fanfic reading, and wondering how the hell anyone over the age of 10 can stand being immersed in mainstream culture.

What do you see as your standing in the SDMB community? Does that correspond to your standing in real life?
Standing? Um…I don’t really go for that social-climbing thing. Too complicated for my tastes. As long as I’m not getting death threats or anything, I’m cool.

How honestly do you represent yourself online?
Honestly, I think I’m a bit too negative. There are a lot of topics that bring up really horrible experiences in my life, and not many that bring up the bright spots. I’m trying to be more pleasant, but it’s been a challenge.

Do you think people here would be surprised by what you are like in real life?
No. Unless they’re expecting me to be athletic and weigh 180 pounds.

Do you find yourself agreeing or disagreeing more often with other members? On what subjects?
There’s a far too great range opinions to give a blanket answer to this. I will say that total disagreements are far more common than total agreements (especially from the extreme conservative posters), but I have better sense than to actually jump into the fray.

Are there any rules (official or not) that you disagree with?
I’ve yet to encounter a single one. Frankly, I don’t know what the hell some people’s problems are. Even if some of the bans are a bit petty or questionable, they’re all things that no sane person is going to miss. If I ever get called on anything (I haven’t yet), my response will be to nod and never do it again.

Who do you see as the leaders of the board?
The moderators. Who, I should point out, have collectively done a fantastic job.

Who on the board do you most look up to? Why?
Aw, geez…unfortunately, I don’t post enough to name names. Suffice to say that anyone who’s civil and intelligent, who sticks to the topic at hand, and who knows where to draw the line is a worthy role model in my book.

Have you made enemies?
I don’t think so. I certainly hope not. I’ve had some heated scrapes in the past, but always bowed out before it got completely out of control. Now that I have a better idea of where not to go, I’m confident that there isn’t anyone currently out to get me.

Do you feel like you know the other members well?
Some. Depends on how often they post and how many subjects they cover. For example, I know that Omniscient is a hardcore football fan, but I haven’t seen enough of his other posts to form an opinion of him.

How important is the anonymity of the board to you?
Not as important as it would be on most other boards. There are some folks here that I’d rather avoid, but it’s not like I feel threatened or anything.

Would you want to meet anyone here in real life? Have you?
I don’t know. Depends on how pleasant they’d be in real life. I can get along with just about anyone who’s not a complete jerk, but finding shared interests might be a challenge. I’ll have to take a pass on this.

What first attracted you to the SDMB?
I’d read The SD books, and found the column online, then found the boards.

What do you keep coming back for?
The sense of community.

How important is the site to you?How much time do you spend per week?day?
I am here far too much – sometimes several hours each day; there have been days I’ve read these boards for ten hours straight.

Do you think it lives up to its stated goal of “fighting ignorance”? How?
Yes – GQ especially, but there’s ignorance fought in the strangest places around here.

What do you think sets the SDMB apart from other message boards?
Fools are not suffered gladly here, and that makes it nice.

What other MBs do you go to?
A webmaster board, and a personal growth board

Which forum do you go to first?
My subscribed threads, then usually ATMB, then either IMHO or MPSIMS, then the other, then the Pit.

Do you lurk more or participate more overall? in any particular forum? on any particular subject?
I lurk far more than I post. I tend to post about GLBT things and idiotic stuff.

Do you enjoy debating, and do you think you hold your own there?
On my few trips into GD, I’ve ended up looking like a fool.

Describe yourself - age, sex, location, occupation, etc. What interests do you have in real life?
I’m 37, male, southern California. I like guys, sex, reading, movies, television, and the internet. I don’t like long walks along the beach; seems pointless.

What do you see as your standing in the SDMB community? Does that correspond to your standing in real life?
I’m largely ignored here, just like real life, and that’s fine with me. I’m very anti-social. I tend to live vicariously through others, and that works out just peachy here.

How honestly do you represent yourself online?
I don’t lie, but I don’t vomit out all the little details that make me, me.

Do you think people here would be surprised by what you are like in real life?
Yes.

Do you find yourself agreeing or disagreeing more often with other members? On what subjects?
I vacillate. A lot.

Are there any rules (official or not) that you disagree with?
There’s rules here? :dubious:

Who do you see as the leaders of the board?
I don’t understand the question.

Who on the board do you most look up to? Why?
I look up to many people, too many to list. I have very low self-esteem, so most everyone is above me.

Have you made enemies?
Not that I’m aware of.

Do you feel like you know the other members well?
Some. Some, not so well.

How important is the anonymity of the board to you?
Very.

Would you want to meet anyone here in real life? Have you?
I’d like to, but it wouldn’t go very well – as I stated above, I’m quite anti-social and sometimes people tend to get the wrong idea about me. I’ve had people tell me to stop being so “uppity” and snooty. Whatever.

** What first attracted you to the SDMB?**
I somehow found a Cecil column when googling some question I had.

What do you keep coming back for?
To take a pulse of public opinion, unscientific a sample as it might be.

**How important is the site to you?How much time do you spend per week?day? **
I don’t take it that seriously. Maybe an hour a day

**Do you think it lives up to its stated goal of “fighting ignorance”? How? **
Not really. Most of us, including me, are here to push an agenda.

What do you think sets the SDMB apart from other message boards?
The moderation and relative civility of the members. Also no photos and flashing avatars and animated smilies, etc.

What other MBs do you go to?
Democratic Underground and Are You Being Served?..And More!

Which forum do you go to first?
Great Debates

Do you lurk more or participate more overall? in any particular forum? on any particular subject?
Depends on subject. Any chance to bash Bush, I’ll take.

Do you enjoy debating, and do you think you hold your own there?
Yes and no. I enjoy it, but the playing field is not level. Some folks have infinitely more time than I to research and write.

Describe yourself - age, sex, location, occupation, etc. What interests do you have in real life? 49 Year old male, Lansing MI area, bridge engineer. Like crosswords, sudoku, baseball, hockey, football, all things Spartan.

What do you see as your standing in the SDMB community? Does that correspond to your standing in real life?
Probably a minor player. If I had as much time as some, I’d be higher up. In real life I’m fairly well respected.

How honestly do you represent yourself online? Quite so.

Do you think people here would be surprised by what you are like in real life? Probably not.

Do you find yourself agreeing or disagreeing more often with other members? On what subjects? Since all viewpoints are here, obviously both.

Are there any rules (official or not) that you disagree with? Thou shalt not disclose thy ignore list.

Who do you see as the leaders of the board? M-I-C-K-E-Y-M-O-U-S-E.

Who on the board do you most look up to? Why? I think John Mace is about the fairest and most articulate out there, though I seldom agree with him.

Have you made enemies? I don’t know. I think I get some people’s goat.

Do you feel like you know the other members well? No.

How important is the anonymity of the board to you? Very much. I don’t write letters to the editor of the paper for fear of infuriating a whack job.

Would you want to meet anyone here in real life? Have you?
No.
