I don’t use FM/AM very often, but they are always in frequency order. On my XM satellite radio, they’re grouped by genre.
Dance/pop music on my A presets
Classical/Jazz on my B presets
Country/sports on my C presets
During baseball season, I put MLB home plate as my last preset on all 3. That way, I can easily scan to find a baseball game.
My presets are set to whatever they were set to when the radio was installed. I bought a new stereo to dock my iPod, who needs radio?
I’m set up weird right now, my number 1 and 6 are local public radio then middle 4 are the music stations and are the ones that I mostly listen to. Typically I go by frequency with #6 saved for whatever local station play 24hr Christmas music but here it turns out that there isn’t one, so #6 got occupied by a local station.
