I’m actually surprised that “Double Star” didn’t rank higher - especially since it won a Hugo award for best novel. But there’s something about that book that puts it fairly down the list in my own rankings, even though I thoroughly enjoy it each time I re-read it. Maybe it’s that the lead character isn’t very likable? At least, not until he grows into the role.
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress ranking #1 is exactly right, though. It’s just a fantastic book, from its depiction of lunar society to its revolutionary intrigue and exploration of AI. It’s certainly my favorite Heinlein novel.
I’m the other vote for this one, among several other choices.
Out of curiosity…are you the “Babydoll” that used to hang with guys known as Dusty, Tully, and Sam? Cuz if you are that would be cool. And I’ll keep the k-fay for ya.
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Double Star, The Door Into Summer, Starship Troopers, and then Friday.
(Oh yeah, and I’m the third vote for Farnham’s Freehold, which I’ve always a had soft spot for because of its unmitigated schlock and cheese and vitriol – I mean it’s a train wreck, the characters themselves are train wrecks, I can’t avert my eyes.)
