If it’s worth [discussing for 200 posts](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=736861), it’s worth a poll. The Song “Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah” by Allan Sherman includes the following couplet: And the head coach wants no sissies So he reads to us from something called Ulysses. Which of the following most closely matches your interpretation of this couplet? ---

I think that due to the rain, the Head Coach likely read them _something_. What he rad them, was my original question. But only the Head Coach reading them _something_ “cause he wants no sissies” makes sense. ---

I, on the other hand, don’t even think it was really raining. Kid’s writing a letter home because the counselor made it a condition of going out to play. And his first day was so underwhelming, he’d rather piss, moan, gripe, and try to manipulate his folks into pulling him out. Until he hears happy sounds outside, coming from all the kids who already finished writing their letters. ---

I was a kid back then and knew there was a very bad novel called _Ulysses_ and if I wrote that line it would get a rise out of my parents, though I didn’t know why. The Tennyson I knew was “Light Brigade” and never heard of “Ulysses” until that thread (I’m not a fan). The “debate” in that other thread is stupid. eta: Was listening to Lorena McKennitt’s “Lady of Shalott” and asked Wife if “Idylls of the King” was any good. “No,” was her simple reply. ---
