Poll:Who knows what advent is?

Never heard of it until I read the OP.

Born and raised in Pennsylvania to a secular/Catholic family.
Moved to a highly Catholic part of Louisiana at age 19. I’m 24 now.

I’m agnostic.

Raised Baptist, but although we never observed Advent (or Lent), I had at least heard of them, and had a fuzzy notion of what they were about.

Became an Anglican (Episcopalian) about three years ago. I’m really into the church calendar now. I even thought about not putting up any Christmas decorations until Dec. 25 (when Christmas actually starts) through Epiphany. But I decided that was going too far to make a point.

  1. Had heard the word. Suspected it had something to do with Christianity (the Adventists had to have gotten it from somewhere). Lent, I knew.

  3. Atheist heathen

The pink one is for the third Sunday of Advent, not the 4th.

1)Yes, I’ve heard of Advent. More religious than secular. I associate it with the 4 Sundays before Christmas, so some years it begins in November. I never had an Advent calendar.

2)Lived in Iowa and Wisconsin.

3)Roman Catholic.

Yes, I know what Advent is… heard of it as a child, and now my church does these Advent series every year.

I’m in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

I go to an Evangelical Free church. Nobody’s ever heard of that when I tell them.

Yes - all my life, Tennessee (born in Michigan), Catholic.

Yes, I know what Advent is. I’m Lutheran.

Whoops… been forever since I actually had an advent wreath so I forgot the order of lighting.

The only thing I evert knew about it was that my grandmother kept little Advent calendars every year right after Thanksgiving. I never really understood what they were for, meant, etc. Everything about Christmas, Easter, Palm Sunday, Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, etc etc etc etc has always baffled me.

But then, I’m a Godless American fag boy anyway, so what would I know about Advent? I know it’s under “A” in the dictionary

YES, I’ve heard of it. I grew up Presbyterian but switched to Episcopalian years ago. Can’t imagine anyone who grew up in any kind of Christian setting to not have heard of advent.

Yes.

Well, I’m glad I’m not the only one who finds it strange that somebody might not have heard of it - and I am really surprised at the number of ‘not heard of it’ replies here - in this country (uk) you cannot enter a store without tripping over a pile of advent calendars plastered with the latest children’s tv stars. TV presenters will make reference to it, and those kid’s arty-crafty shows will do a ‘make-your-own-calendar’ bit… I honestly doubt if anyone in the whole country hasn’t at least heard of it.

I guess some of the states don’t have the same thing, though - I’m surprised because I would have thought the chocolate companies would be keen to promote the sale of minute amounts of chocolate for large amounts of money…
