Suppose you bought a van that was advertised as having a 9-speed automatic transmission. [However, you later learned that your van literally never used 8th and 9th gears, even at freeway speeds, making it effectively a 7-speed transmission](https://www.curbsideclassic.com/blog/new-cars/when-is-a-nine-speed-automatic-only-a-seven-speed-when-its-installed-in-a-promaster-van-some-owners-are-feeling-cheated/) (At least at sane driving speeds; maybe if you got the van up to 100 mph it would upshift). This is because the manufacturer simply repurposed an existing transmission that was designed for a different vehicle, and in a big, boxy, un-aerodynamic van there’s never an appropriate time to use the top two gears at normal driving speeds. Note that this is the base transmission; it’s not like you paid extra for more gears. Would you feel cheated? _Poll ([view on site](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/polls-only-no-discussion/953642/2102))_ ---
