I took an online class and the woman’s pronunciation was so distracting I could not learn anything from the class (assuming, of course, there _was_ anything to learn from that class.) Today’s pronunciation discussion is innovative: First: “innovate”, as in “We must innovate in order to hit the market first”. Where do you put the emphasis? _Poll ([view on site](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/polls-only-no-discussion/953642/3752))_ Now “innovating”: “We are innovating as fast as we can” _Poll ([view on site](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/polls-only-no-discussion/953642/3752))_ Now we make the noun form: “innovation”, as in “This innovation will let us be first-to-market”. Where do you put the emphasis? _Poll ([view on site](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/polls-only-no-discussion/953642/3752))_ Now we make the adjective: “innovative”, as in “Karen is so innovative, we should give her a huge raise”. Where do you put the emphasis? _Poll ([view on site](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/polls-only-no-discussion/953642/3752))_ Can you think of any other word where you would put the emphasis on a different syllable between the -ation form and the -ative form? _Poll ([view on site](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/polls-only-no-discussion/953642/3752))_ Are you _Poll ([view on site](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/polls-only-no-discussion/953642/3752))_ New Zealandish??? _Poll ([view on site](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/polls-only-no-discussion/953642/3752))_ The speaker in the online class said “innovation” and “innovating” correctly, but inexplicably emphasized the second syllable in “innovative” – inNOVative. Drove me nuts. ---

It’s November 2024. The polling looks like the same for any other election; your candidate and the opposing candidate are tied neck-and-neck, or at least no one’s got more than a 5% lead. All the predictions are that this one is going to go down to the wire. The polls are all scientifically run. Both candidates are normal, boilerplate politicians (think Bush vs. Gore, or Clinton vs. Dole.) Election Night comes and…it’s an utter shock. Your candidate has won (or lost) in a 538-0 landslide in the Electoral College. 99% of all popular votes are cast in favor of one candidate. One party captures all 435 House seats. Voter turnout is 99%. In the wake of the election, the losing candidate (and party) screams “Rigged! Impossible!” The winning party scoffs and says, _“You can’t rig an election so large - America is divided into thousands of voting precincts, all of whom vote in different methods, with tens of thousands of poll watchers and workers - how could you get them ALL to rig it at once and bribe them ALL, and have NONE of them spill the beans?”_ You’re a prominent public figure, and are asked about your views on the matter. What do you say? _Poll ([view on site](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/polls-only-no-discussion/953642/3760))_ ---
