You are at the age of 35 or 40 and you have accumulated enough wealth (in a very high-paying career) that you could quit your job right now and retire early - living modestly (not lavishly, but well off enough that you need never fear financial hardship for the rest of your life.) And you really hate work. Problem is, your spouse finds early retirement weird and objects to this (FIRE; the Financial Independence, Retire Early lifestyle discussed in another thread) and wants you to keep working til age 60 “like most normal folks do,” which will also enable the two of you to live more lavishly and buy/do more things, and also result in more money for the kids. You are chairman of either the DNC or RNC. An extremist third-party is running (an extreme version of **your** party), and although they don’t have a hair’s chance of winning the presidential race, poll analysis shows that they are likely to suck 7% or even 10% of the vote away from your party’s candidate in the general election, potentially handing victory to the opposing side. You arrange a meeting with this third party’s leadership and tell them that if they keep this up, the opposing side will win due to the split vote. The leadership says they know, but they refuse to drop out of the race unless you promise to adopt their **entire** party platform and policy proposals down to the letter, no compromise. Problem is, their policies are so extremist they will likely turn away a significant number of swing/moderate voters.
