Imagine you are given instructions for a process to follow. There are two parts: a text part and an example part. The text part gives step-by-step general instructions. The example part explains what you would do at each step in a specific scenario. Suppose in the text part, there is a sentence that is ambiguous, but if you look at the example, the meaning of that sentence becomes clear. Would you feel that you have been given adequate instructions or would you think the fact that you needed to follow the example to understand them means the instructions were inadequate? _Poll ([view on site](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/polls-only-no-discussion/953642/5533))_ ---

Parent A and Parent B have a 7-year-old daughter. They enjoy feeding squirrels. The critters that visit them are black or brown. The parents casually refer to them as “Blackie” or “Brownie” (for example, “Blackie grabbed three nuts and ran up the tree.”) One day the daughter said, “you shouldn’t call him Blackie, that’s racist.” The parents disagree as to how to approach this. Parent A believes they should honor the daughter’s wishes and come up with new nicknames, praising her for her awareness of the social issue. Parent B believes that the names are descriptive, not racist, and they should explain this to their daughter and continue to use them. With which parents do you most agree? _Poll ([view on site](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/polls-only-no-discussion/953642/5539))_ ---

Dana is an 18 year old who lives in a liberal Western democracy. His/her family go to Elbonia on holiday. Elbonia has made no secret that some things are against the law and may incur severe penalties, including many things that are either not illegal or very minor in Dana’s home country. Dana commits such an “offence”, whether through ignorance of the law or overconfidence is unclear. Dana may be going to prison for 20 years but Elbonia indicate that there may be a deal to be had if LWD give them concessions. _Poll ([view on site](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/polls-only-no-discussion/953642/5540))_ ---
