Imagine it’s the first day of a college class. There are enough seats in the classroom for everyone who is registered, but there are many students trying to add the class so there are not enough seats for everyone attending that day. This is a dilemma I have struggled with my whole life and am still not sure of the answer to. In English, every letter has a one-syllable name except for W, which has a three-syllable name. This is an unacceptable state of affairs. What makes W so special? How much time has been wasted over the years by saying “double you” which could have been devoted to more productive endeavors?
