In some countries, it is common for apartment buildings to have their windows surrounded by a steel cage. The main argument for is that it keeps young children safe from falling to their deaths, serve as a useful shelf of sorts, and also stops intruders from coming in via the window. The main argument against is that they are a hazard because it prevents you from escaping via the window in the event of fire, earthquake, etc. _Poll ([view on site](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/polls-only-no-discussion/953642/6832))_ ---

What name(s) do you go by? For purposes of this poll, your legal name includes your given name(s), surname(s), middle name(s), or any combination of those. So if your name is Robert Alfred Smith and you go by Robert, Alfred, Smith, Robert Alfred, or something like that, you would select that you go by your legal name. If that was your name and you went by Bob, Al, Smithy, Bobby S, Wrong Way Bob, Big Alfred, Mr. S., or some other shortening or variation of your legal name, you would select that you go by a nickname based on your legal name. _Poll ([view on site](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/polls-only-no-discussion/953642/6833))_ ---

While waiting to turn left at a red traffic light, I noticed a Ram pickup truck behind me was flashing red and blue lights. I pulled aside and let the truck go through the red traffic light. Only then did I realize that the lights were odd: very thin red and blue lights squeezed around the headlights. The truck went through another red traffic light, but waited for subsequent red traffic lights. As a result, I eventually caught up to him and made a mental note of his license plate. At home, I looked up the license plate number, found the make and model matched, and found that it seemed to be a private vehicle. What would you have done with this information? _Poll ([view on site](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/polls-only-no-discussion/953642/6838))_ ---
