I was reminded of this by the exchange about correcting the pronunciation of peoples’ names in [another thread](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/words-you-ve-never-heard-pronounced/963774/124). You meet an Australian woman named Amber. She insists her name is supposed to be pronounced “Ambah” – the ‘r’ is supposed to be silent. (Something that actually happened to me).
