You can be sexually attracted to a friend but value the friendship more than the prospect of orgasm. And Edward’s a handsome, do-gooding lawyer worth hundreds of millions of dollars; he can’t be lacking for romantic opportunities. He may simply feel the friendship of a clever, charming artist is worthwhile even sans BJs, and helping her by spending what to him is a trivial amount of money is also worthwhile.
I don’t consider artistic nude modeling to be akin to even sex chat lines, let alone whoring. Hell, my wife has posed for nude photos, and my stepdaughter takes such photos.
Anyway, I can’t imagine your basic question can be answered. Too much stigma.
They presumably have a sexual harassment policy and a procedure for investigating complaints and taking appropriate action. A one-time comment that was at least arguably an innocent compliment or joke probably would not be considered harassment, but a faculty member openly speculating about who a student is fucking in exchange for money is a different story – especially if he’s been spreading this around the department. IANAL (although fortunately for Lily, her close personal friend Edward is), but that sure sounds like a hostile learning environment to me. If the professor has been gossiping then this may also count as some sort of defamation.
Yes, Lily should be a bit suspicious. Especially given Anna’s report on his past behavior, Lily should keep her eyes open and be ready to head for the door if he starts to get controlling… or worse.
Sounds like the plot line to Daddy Long Legs. You know, plus that episode of How I Met Your Mother where Lily is having a hard time selling her paintings.
I was reminded of Daddy Long Legs too – it’s an old Fred Astaire/Leslie Caron musical in which Astaire is Caron’s anonymous benefactor. (Well, it was originally a novel and there have been other film adaptations, but this is the most famous.) Caron is a charming French orphan, and after seeing her tutoring the younger children at the orphanage Astaire decides to pay for her to attend college in the US. The big difference is that Caron knows she has an anonymous benefactor, she just doesn’t know who he is. When Astaire visits the college to see her he deliberately does not reveal that he’s the one who’s been paying for her education. Romance ensues.
On another board a member of academia said a couple of her students were doing “gay for pay” plus if you look at all the “Girls Gone Wild - College edition” stuff out there I’m thinking its pretty common.
You would be surprised about college students bragging besides sooner or later its going to get out anyways. Can you blame a girl for posing for coed pic like “Girls of the Big 10” in Penthouse if they get paid well?
On the modeling, it can come close. The one who did the modeling told me several times she had to set limits on what she was willing to do.
This hypothetical doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.
What was printed on Lily’s lease? If the apartment isn’t rent-controlled, the actual monthly cost has to go on the lease. No landlord is going to commit fraud just because a rich guy asked.
How did the Prof find out about the scholarship? The financial side of college is kept pretty separate from the academic side.
2a) How would ANYONE know about the scholarship and why would people assume it was earned on her back? There are literally millions of scholarships available to students in the US given by millions of different groups.
Why would the Prof use his last day on the job to call a student a whore to her face? He’s just guaranteed that the school (and himself) will be on the opposite end of a massive lawsuit.
How did Lily apply for this scholarship? Was she already in school? If so, how was she paying for it then? Did rich guy encourage her to apply (for school or the scholarship)? Basically, getting the money to her in secret is impossible without her already going for it.
Look, you have the right to fantasize about whatever you want, but I am not going to provide you with wank material about naughty coeds. There must be plenty of porn out there dealing with this sort of subject matter, and it is creepy and disturbing that instead of availing yourself of this you’re asking me to fuel your fantasy by telling tales about the students I work with.
Yeah…I think you’ve found the Uncanny Valley of Skalditheticals here. It’s too close to what many of us know and yet it’s just not adding up. When come back, bring alien gods and interstellar travel.
By Neith, how long do you think these hypos are gonna be if I explain every niggling little detail.
Edward is filthy rich. Maybe he owns the building. If not, he probably bribed the manager, paying that particular person an extra grand a month on top of the subsidy to Lily’s rent…
The prof was married to a financial aid officer; the matter came up during pillow talk. It happens. I know tons of things I officially should not because of gossip.
When else is the Prof going to say such a thing but when he’s on the way out the door? I’m not retired, but when say, I left retail for banking, I did tons of things I wouldn’t have ordinarily. ((Lotta folks got free delivery that last week, based entirely on whether I liked the salesperson and the salesperson needed the help.)
Edward suggested Lily apply, claiming he knew about the scholarship because of his association with the school.
If this were a novel I might have gone into all that. But it’s not a novel; it’s a 500 word piece if fluff I wrote while waiting for my pizza to be delivered. And no piece if fiction ever matches completely with reality anyway, because it’s, you know, a lie.
Anywhistle…since you give every evidence of disliking my hypos, I urge you to spare yourself the trauma of reading them. I promise not to send any thugs to your house to punish you for ignoring them.
