Pop culture flotsam: things that long outlive the work they came from

Similarly, the default Nokia text message receipt tune is the Morse code for SMS (Short Message Service). I guess that’s the only time most people will hear Morse.

Didn’t the MPAA reduce it’s rating to R over 20 years ago? BTW what X/NC-17 rated films have won Academy Awards since then?

In the UK a very similar idea is expressed in terms of Heath Robinson

Although Midnight Cowboy was originally rated X, it was re-rated R in 1971. As far as I know, no other X- or NC-17-rated films have won Oscars.

“I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!”

The company (or a similar service) is still in business, although obviously they don’t use THAT particular ad any more.

At one point, one of those pendant companies did a remake of the ad, but the actress was terrible…a monotone “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” while stretched out on the floor.

I’ve always thought the line was meant to be a parody of the older line “Hey, I’m working here.”

Actually, it was an ad-lib. They were filming on a busy street, and needed to get the shot and move on. As they were crossing and running the scene, that car came cruising right through the crosswalk (as cars in NYC are wont to do). Hoffman wanted to yell “Hey, asshole, we’re filming here!” but he couldn’t (because they were out of time for this shot and couldn’t go again), so he yelled the next thing that popped into his head.

The guy ignored him and drove on. But now he can say he was in a scene with Dustin Hoffman!

Maybe, maybe not. See the “Production” entry.

Huh. Yeah, I heard Hoffman tell it…

I often use the phrase “I love it when a plan comes together.”

It was brought to my attention and horror that it is a quote from “The A-Team” which I never watched.

I’m also thrilled to be a part of the planet that promotes the phrase “I’m your Huckleberry.” to the diaspora.
