I make a distinction between answer songs and sequels. An answer song is a response to a previous song, usually by a different artist, whereas a sequel continues the story from an earlier song, often by the same artist. Some sequels that spring to mind:

**Jimmy Dean** - “Big John” followed by “Cajun Queen” and “Little Bitty Big John”
**The Midnighters** - “Work With Me Annie” followed by “Annie Had a Baby” etc etc
**The Angels** - “My Boyfriend’s Back” then “The Guy With the Black Eye”
**The Hollywood Argyles** - “Alley Oop” then “Alley Oop Was a One-Dab Man”
**The Royal Guardsmen** - “Snoopy Vs. the Red Baron” then the entire first half of their second album
**The Cadillacs** - “Speedo” then “Speedo is Back”

You’d think he would get time off for not shooting the Deputy. 🙂

I’d have gone with something like _Actually, I Didn’t Shoot the Sherriff Either, I Swear (The Mumia Abu Jamal Song)_.

Actual sorta kinda sequel or follow-up. In the mid-90s, in a song called _Eden Is Burning_, John Mellencamp looked in on _Jack and Diane_, those two American kids from the heartland who were wont to sit outside Tastee Freezes and dribble off their Bobbie Brooks. They weren’t getting along so well, bitching at each over a Richard Pryor movie, as I recall.

One or two others I happened to think of …

_King of Extra-Strength Tylenol_ – Police

_Yo, Roxanne, Get That Red Light Back Out, Bitch_ – Sequel to the Police original by some rap group.

_Driving With My License Suspended_, _Driving With My License Revoked_, and finally _Doing Hard Time For Driving Without A License_ – Series of sequels to Sammy Hagar’s _I Can’t Drive 55_.

_Pretty Woman Slapped Me Down Hard_ – Roy Orbison

“Bo Diddley” is followed up–with every song Bo Diddley ever made. Not that it is bad mind you.

Also Buddy Holly had to follow “Peggy Sue” with the sad news “Peggy Sue got Married”.

Made up Ones:

“911 Ain’t a Joke Anymore” by Flava Flav

“Queen of Rock” by Latifah.

“Satellite Radio Ga Ga” by Queen

“Old Americans, or Let’s Sit” by Bowie

Janis Ian doing a follow-up to “At Seventeen” called “At Fifty-two”.

For those who don’t get it, last year in Canada Janis Ian married her female lover Patricia Snyder in Canada. Janis was married to a man named Tino Sargo from 1978-1983. She’s obviously “learned the truth” about love since her earlier years.

(And before anyone jumps in and corrects me, _yes_ I know that the song “At Seventeen” was hardly autobiographical. Janis Ian is my favorite musical artist. Janis had dropped out of school before the age of 17, and wasn’t even living with her parents.)

I guess David Bowie’s “Ashes to Ashes” is a sequel to “Space Oddity”; we finally learn the truth about that Major Tom!

Bowie failed to follow up on most of his other songs though, so there was sadly never “The Man Who Attempted to Return the World, But Had to Settle for an Exchange” or “Rock and Roll Funeral”.

Thinking of songs with titles that begin with “Rock and Roll”, The Ramones’ “Rock and Roll High School” has obvious sequel potential. (Let’s not get into the subject of the sequel to the movie of the same name.) There could be various rock institutions of higher learning, perhaps culminating with “Rock and Roll Med School”.

I could swear I once read a Pearl Jam interview where the band members joked about doing a sequel to “Jeremy”. Maybe they could call it “Jeremy II: The Undead”, although “Jeremy II: Now He Won’t Shut Up in Class” might be good too.

I’d love to hear AC/DC do “Ironically, My _Penis_ Is Quite Small”.
