> I was watching an episode of Pawn Stars where Big Hoss says the Beatles are overrated, essentially they were the first boy band. That kind of shook me for a second, because it seemed perfectly true, but I took a history of rock and roll class that dissected their contributions to music as a whole.

Thankfully, I’ve never been subjected to an episode of Pawn Stars, but the idea of gleaning anything whatsoever about rock ‘n’ roll history from a guy named Big Hoss tickles me to no end.

I won’t try to talk any of those here who’ve said they just don’t like The Beatles out of their point of view — but if you honestly think they were just a boy band whose contributions to rock were minimal, then it’s best you hold your tongue before you make an even bigger ass of yourself than you already have.

And by the way, those contributions were just as significant from 1963-1965 as they were from 1966-1969.

**Tom Petty and The Fartmakers** – Boring crap.

**Guns N’ Posers** – Led Zeppelin wannabes with a whiny singer.

**Yes** – Overproduced shite. Just say “No” to Yes.

**Pink Floyd** – The first album is awesome; it’s fun and clever. Every other album is unlistenable. A bunch of boring, pretentious, droning crapola that takes itself _way_ too seriously.

**U2** – Pretentious, pompous, irrelevant shit.

Arena Bands from the 1970s – **Journey, Oreo Speedwagon, Triumph, Styx, Foreigner** – nothing more than sing-along ballads for people who know nothing about music.

**KISS** – Without a doubt, the most talentless rock band ever to make it big. They’re only popular due to their stage props & antics. Whoever wrote their “songs” should be taken out back and beaten.

Hard rock bands that think they’re cool based on the spelling of their name - like **Mötley Crüe, W.A.S.P.** and **Ratt** – are generally worthless. Nothing to see here.

I agree. _Exile in Guyville_ is one of the best debut albums by any artist. I still listen to it and it holds up over 20 years later. Unfortunately, I lost interest in her later material.

Heh. I saw Vince Neil waddle his fat ass on stage last summer. Not only did he sound like shit, he was huffing & puffing like Louie Anderson with emphysema. I thought he was going to clutch and vapor lock. It wouldn’t kill him to hit the gym every now and again.

Not that she is super popular with people these days but I always thought Joni Mitchell was some kind of elaborate joke. Her singing is so grating that it is painful to me. Rush is the same way but there are plenty of people that hate them.

**The Barenaked Ladies**. There were lots of annoying novelty hipster groups from Canada that should never have gone beyond their local bar scene (like Crash Test Dummies or Moxy Fruvous), and this one is probably the worst of the lot. They got a lot of free publicity when starting out because some politician wanted to ban them from playing somewhere because of their name. If only the ban had succeeded.

No, it was not “damn good”. The other stuff on _Grand Illusion_ is better than the slipshod digression that is _Miss America_, and with the prevalence of all that goopy keyboard slop, _Grand Illusion_ is probably the most garbagey album Styx put out. I mean, even _Blue Collar Man_ is better than anything on Grand Illusion, and that is going pretty low.

I had wanted to read their group autobiography “The Dirt” ever since it came out, and finally did so about a year ago. What horrible lives they’ve all had, and it was really, really obvious to me that Vince and Nikki were horribly abused as children - definitely physically and mentally, and probably sexually as well. I just felt sorry for them, that’s all.

Whatever. The bands people here hate make me know it’s okay not to care what they think.

Hall and Oats got inducted into the schlock and mold hall of fame today. What a worthless place that proclaims it to be.

I don’t like **Bob Dylan**. I completely understand his contribution to music. I know that many people love him. I have no problem with that. I even appreciate some, if not a lot, of his catalog. However I have always found him irritating as a performer.

If I really thought about it, I could probably come up with along list of bands that seem capable enough for, say, a house band but whose ardent following mystifies me. Barenaked Ladies is another one that occurs to me.

Given that this is the kind of thing that I’m going to wonder about all day, which song are you thinking of? The only song of theirs that I enjoy is “Whatever,” and even then I only really love the [awesome chorale version of it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVA2c1R5Y00). However, I’m pretty much completely out of the Oasis loop and have heard about five songs of theirs.

You might want to read it again. I have no idea what you are trying to say. What I said was what Big Hoss said did seem to make sense until I remembered what I learned in a college course about the Beatles.

You don’t need to pay money for Bob Seger - his songs are on the radio every minute of every day. Try flipping through the stations in a market that has 3-4 classic rock stations, like Cleveland. You’ll always run in to Seger!

My comment was a general one, not aimed at you specifically.

I was saying how foolish it would be for anyone to look to a guy who works at a pawn shop named Big Hoss for tutelage on the subject of rock ‘n’ roll. This feeling was intensified by the utter absurdity of what he actually said and the know-it-all way in which he no doubt said it.

I’m pleased that what you learned in college superseded Big Hoss’s bullshit.
