Porn actors and personal problems i.e. 'damaged goods' - is this true, or an ugly stereotype?

Masturbation facilitator?

One wonders if it is related to the username.

It started in October 2000, I left in 2007.

What we intended it to be was a site that was female-friendly, respectful, and completely ethical and legal in every way, to prove it could be done. That remained the same throughout, and I think to this day. No problem there.

We also wanted it to be regular women, the girls-next-door you see every day, in as natural a state as possible, which meant minimal-to-no make-up, no shaved pubes, no fake boobs, etc. Tattoos were fine, they’re unavoidable really.

But I also wanted it to be a way to be creative and produce unique, high quality photos and videos, which meant using our profits for expensive equipment, cameras, lights, etc, and to use our available time thoughtfully, to take an extra few minutes to set things up to be completely beautiful works of art. I also wanted a sense of humour, to go back to the era of telling stories, to play out fantasies that had either a complete artifice, like a superhero or action movie, or be very domestic like a soap opera. I had such plans. The closest I came was a Tomb Raider spoof video I did for the model Christiana. I’m sure it’s online someplace if you want to look that up.

But instead the company increased the output, churned out photoshoots like a factory, it went from three new models per week to seven, which meant each shoot was brief, and rushed, and in my opinion made the site bland and boring, with nothing to make it stand out amongst the increasing number of copycat sites (a few of which were directly inspired by ours).

I realised that would never happen, and my desires would never go fulfilled there, so I moved on.

I wish I had had the foresight to ask for shares in the company, though. I’d be a lot wealthier than I am now. They even wrote me out of the “official” history even though I created half the regular features they still use today.

I read a book where a psychologist speculated a lot of porn stars are bipolar (which is pretty logical, they are supposed to be absolute freaks in the sack), and they also have the ability to compartmentalize. He said, how else could they ‘go to work’ all day and go home and make macaroni and cheese for the family, do a crossword puzzle, putting their ‘job’ aside as if they worked in a widget factory.

There are people who work more fucked up jobs than porn, though, who are able to do the same thing, and nobody considers them to be bipolar. The idea of porn being a weird job or traumatizing in some way, only comes from societal mores, not from anything inherent to the work. EMTs have to drive around all day looking at horrific gore, prying dead bodies out of crushed cars, doctors have to cut people open and sometimes have them die, etc…nobody would ever suggest these individuals are “bipolar” because they are able to do these jobs and still have normal lives.

I also have read that porn actors sell or at least rent out their babies and children to child porn producers for a shit-ton of money. That sounds logical, drugs aren’t cheap, the money is great, and meat is meat is meat. All those millions and millions of pictures and videos of child porn have to come from SOMEWHERE.

You need to find more plausible sources for conspiracy theories. What utter nonsense. Cleanse your mind of this rubbish before you spread it further.

But a psychologist speculated it

Leaving aside the unlikely sensationalism of that claim…

That really doesn’t make much logical sense. What shit-ton of money? All that garbage is deep underground and unlike drugs is consumed by a pretty tiny minority of the population. I can’t imagine there is any seriously significant revenue to be generated.

That’s not how bipolar works. People who have bipolar disorder can’t switch between mania and depression at will. Some people with mania will have an increased sex drive and may be disinhibited, but they are going to be less able to ‘switch off’ this behaviour when needed than someone who isn’t manic.

Not knowing how “bipolar works” is sadly commonplace.

I think what damages is after the porn career is done and they realize they simply cannot rejoin “regular” society. If you become well known as a porn star that is basically all you are ever allowed to be. There are plenty of stories of girls who did porn for a while, paid for an education from it, and then found out they are utterly unhireable.

Bree Olson made that argument and while I’m sure it can be different for everyone, its a pretty compelling one. The more successful you are in porn, the better known you are, the bigger the public notoriety is likely to be after your career ends.

A while back, I stumbled across the “Wood Rocket” channel on YouTube. Link spoilered below, no outright nudity but still pretty NSFW. The channel features short interviews with porn actors, on topics ranging from their experiences in the industry, to their personal background, to random crap. I don’t know how much of these interviews is promotional content (i.e., you will make us look good if you want to keep working) and how much is really genuine. The actors seem mostly genuine to me, but I guess I dunno. Anyway, the actors seem to be pretty normal folks: some who have family troubles, some whose families support their work, some who just do the job for the paycheck and then go home to play video games, and some who really love the job. It’s pretty fascinating.

Reported.
