I’ve known a lot of people who, growing up, felt that they were turned on by very strange and archaic things. Being near my age, they pretty much turned to the Internet to satisfy those urges and expressed gratitude that they had that as an outlet, so they’d be able to find things they enjoyed and also felt less freakish. I know that there were underground places where you could acquire bondage type photos back in the day…but from what I’ve seen, those photos are pretty limited. And considering that today, you can find things like, say, balloon porn, there were probably quite a few people going unsatisfied in the days of yore. My question is, for those of you who didn’t have access to the Internet as you came of age, and felt as though sneaking Playboys just weren’t enough for you, what did you do? Did you feel odd? Did you know about the concepts of fetishes, or kinks? ---

The only resource, outside of porn shops, that I remember being pretting ubiquitous was _The Joy of Sex_, which had a chapter or two on Kinkiness 101. I don’t think it covered fetishes much, though, just some toys, games and equipment. ---

A lot of stuff that is now available on the Internet had its enclaves in the pre-Internet days. I’m not only talking about porn. There’s a delightful book called **High Weirdness by Mail** that came out about 20 years ago. It had lists of places you could write to where people would send you back information (“I am interested in your ideas and would like to subscribe to your newsletter”) Strange cults and religions, artwork, 'zines, humorous societies, political groups, shared-interest hobbyists, and, of course, specialized porn and fetishes. (High weirdness waasn’t the only place to find these, of course. There were 'zines like **Factsheet Five** that listed these places as well). All the communities of the Obsessed. Of course, as soon as the Internet became established, these people moved there – it was much faster than the US “snail mail” (you got instant gratification at the touch of a URL), and you could put up gliutzy animated graphics, photos, and color. But certainly specialized fetishes had their mail networks before they had electronic connections. ---

I was born in 72. I can remember the neighborhood smut shop had quite the selection of magazines. There were quite a variety of magazines devoted to light bondage, gay men, fat women, old women, black women, Asian women, magazines that focused on large boobs and asses, etc. You didn’t see nearly as much variety in the adult films being sold there at the time. The erotic novels, on the other hand, seemed to offer titles for a lot of different fetishes, one of the most popular topics I seem to remember was nuns being violated. ---

Born in 1967. I love tall women, and actually would draw pictures of tall women. Now, with the internet, six foot models are everywhere. And as a cultural bonus: athletic/tall women are considered HOT: Maria Sharapova (6’2"), Jennie Finch (6’1"), etc. I think the internet helped people get a better look at female athletes. Prior to the net/web, the desire for tall women was left pretty much unfulfilled, and athletic women who were hot were far and few. ---

In some of the cheaper porn mags I remember seeing when I was just a little perv (this would have been in the early early 80’s), there were ads with blurry photographs or drawings of women dressed up like babies, or women in farmyard environments, and of course, the requsite Femme Dom. I also recall coming across a water-sports magazine at one point. A whole magazine of stories having to deal with water sports, and a small handful of pictures of girls peeing. Very odd, at the time. ---

I was born in 1960. I have always had a “knockout” fetish – I like to see attractive, scantily-clad women (especially superheroines!) getting rendered unconscious (by chloroform, punches, blows to the head, electric shock, gas, etc.) and taken captive! It goes from she’s tied up and that’s it, to her breaking free and smashing everyone, to being raped and secretly enjoying it ( after all, why do you think a superhuman keeps losing to mere humans ? ), being experimented on ( often sexually, naturally ), being sold into slavery or gang raped, to the gruesome or bizarre. Impregnation by aliens or mutants ( possibly including birthing the results ), being killed and eaten, turned into a rubberized toy, etc. How far it goes depends on the artist or writer, naturally. ---

Its interesting how some fetishes have become mainstream. As a kid in the late 70’s I found one of those high dollar porn store fetish magazines, and the fetish was…womens with shaved privates. Similarly, I am told that Penthouse and other “mainstream” porno mags now show peeing on occasion. ---

I am a pure paraphiliac, and evidently my demented little brain, very early on in my development (or lack of it – Ha!), substituted “KO/capture” for sex! For some reason, I do not take that next step into actual sex/rape of the superheroine! I have no idea why! There are a couple of things I daydreamed about in my younger days that I never knew anyone else and I didn’t even expect to see that in porn. Now with the internet it’s hard to think of it as exotic. I don’t even know how anyone has the chance to think anything up before they see an example. To be honest a lot of the things that were weird or exotic about my fantasies as a kid I had no desire to see in porn because the first porn I was exposed to was kind of misogynistic or had an unkind attitude about it that made it hard for me to picture any of those things being portrayed in porn with the same spirit I saw it in my head. So I didn’t even conceive of there being porn that would be some realization of my ideas or an outlet for me. Now I think I was halfway right about that. It’s there now but it’s not that easy for me to find. I think they still haven’t made the niche for just what I want to see and maybe they’re never going to. Maybe I am just weird. ---

I reached puberty in the late '50s, and there was nothing I could relate to. First, I was attracted to other boys; second, my fantasies were anything but vanilla. Since I had no exposure whatsoever to porn, I didn’t know anyone else even had fantasies like mine. So I learned to draw. I invented oral sex. I invented anal sex. I invited bondage.
