In [this thread](http://216.33.236.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=c3acc835ac9ce7ceaf9d76c7bd80a708&lat=998945641&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fboards%2estraightdope%2ecom%2fsdmb%2fshowthread%2ephp%3fthreadid%3d83883) Even Sven tells the following story:

> [@](#):
>
> …Mike, actually chose the best possible way to come out. He was my best friend’s college roommate. On the first day of school, as we all moved into dorms, my friend and Mike went around meeting people. On the second day, my friend and a lot of the people we know (all of us straight) decided to go the gay/lesbian/bisexual/etc reception in order to support friends, eat yummy food and dance.
>
> Imagine our surprise when we saw Mike there, too. It took us a while to understand that Mike was at the reception because he was gay. It ends up that the reception was the first event that Mike had ever been to “out”. He must have been rather amazed to see that almost every single person that he had met the day before was there, too! It certainly quelled his fears about coming out to his roommate

My heart was considerably warmed by this. It reminded me of how when I finally got up the courage to come out to one of my friends in Jr. High (about 15 years ago mind you) I made a big production of it, and was obviously very worried. The response I got once I FINALLY said it was “I can’t believe you had such a low opinion of me and our friendship that you thought this would make one bit of difference.” (The guy latter made a pass at me and then disappeared from my life completely afterwards, but hey! It made me feel really good at the time.)

Does anyone else have any really GOOD POSITVE stories about coming out? Not just the normal “everyone has been really supportive” good stories but specific examples where you (or someone you know) were genuinely surpassed by a specific example of real support.

I could use some happy stories 🙂

**Beltane** , you’re having a real problem with that url tag, aren’t you? 🙂

I came out to my parents while telling them I was switching from Computer Engineering to Music Education. My mother, having long suspected (since I had an overtly gay friend at the time), actually asked me if I was gay. Now, my mother raised me with one rule - never lie to her. So, I told her the truth. Sadly, she couldn’t handle the truth.

Mom: “I thought you were a gift from God - I guess this is God’s joke on me.”

Dad: called me a “cock-sucking butt-fucking faggot.”

Evil sister: “Your life is useless 'cause you’re just going to die from AIDS anyway.”

Good sister: “Well, _duh!_” 😃

Oh, wait, this was supposed to be happy coming out stories, wasn’t it? Well, despite the above, it was. Here I am, almost 15 years later, and things couldn’t be sweeter (although Mom still objects to me participating in gay pride parades, for safety reasons - she’s not exactly a city girl).

Mom: “My next husband’s going to be a woman.”

Mom: “Why did you dump him? He was a _doctor!_”

Dad: “I don’t care who they are - invite 'em over for a party!”

Good sister: “Dammit, don’t check out the same guys as me!”

😃

I love my family.

When I told my father it went something like this.

“Actually, Dad, I’m gay.”

“I know. I’ve known for years. Did you finish washing the car?”

“And… um… I have a girlfriend.”

“I know. It was that girl who was here last week.”

At that point I just kind of stood there wanting to melt into the floor. But it was definately positive.

Nothing overly positive from my parents, sadly. They pretended to accept me for it when I came out to them, but it was a facetious acceptance.

(about a week after the day I opened up)
Mom: You’re gay because you don’t love us!

Dad: We still love you. Just don’t do anything ‘gay’ near us.

Mmm…they both urged me to see a counselor. Then a priest.

My siblings took it better.

Ash: I’m gay!

Sister1 and Sister2: Duh.

On the whole–a lukewarm reception. My real happiness came from my friends…of which my closest at the time already surmised. Each and every one of my friends completely accepted me…after nearly 6 years of trying to hide it, the realization that my friends still loved me gave me the hope to completely revolutionize my life…and I have. 🙂

Well mine was pretty damn positive with both family and friends. It went something like this with my family:

- Mom: Well halleluia!
- Dad: Cool
- Older bro: Oh, ok
- Twin: No you arent! Really, you are? Oh, well…
- Sister in Law: I’m happy for you.

There really isnt much more than that. I was kind of dissapointed, where is the drama that all gay boys are assured of? Oh wait. that’s Hollywood :). I actually wouldnt have wanted it any other way. Seems i’m fortunate to have had such a positive response.

Even my coworkers havent said anything negative. And, it’s nice being out at work, because i can flirt with my cute friend Scott next door (who’s also gay).

I had a group of about six friends (all male) in college. We spent a huge amount of time drinking beer, smoking pot while watching TV. One of the guys, Scott, was gay though I had no idea. As I recall, the conversation went:

Scott: I have something that I have to tell you guys.
Someone: OK, what is it.
Scott: I’m gay.
Someone else: So?
Me: OK, cool.
Another person: That’s nice. Do you want another beer?

…and so on. None of us really gave a shit one way or the other. I think that Scott was actually disappointed that there wasn’t any drama.
