Possible Console War: Generation 8 Rumble

That would suck if it’s only as powerful as the ps3. That level of processing these days makes it trivial and cheap to easy outperform a 360. The system is going to cost $400, right? So that’s not super cheapo. They could easily have a low end core 2 duo and 5700 class setup in that price range and be 3-10x more powerful than a 360/ps3 depending on what you’re specifically talking about. I guess unless new novel technology is really expensive, the controllers and such.

Where are you getting that info? Maybe you’re just misreading 1080p main screen + smaller screens for the controllers. The ipad doesn’t even approach 1080p on a tablet form and it’s much bigger and relies more on the screen than this console would.

I guess if they were doing that way, they might actually have embedded processors so the controllers weren’t just dumb terminals but actually communicated with the console in a client/server relationship and didn’t transmit all of the video data but just game world updates while the unit did a lot of the processing locally. That’d make the peripherals pricey though so I doubt that’s the route they went.

Still, these aren’t meant to be giant tablets themselves, right? More like the private video screen thing on the dreamcast controller, just much better. In that case even a 320x240 resolution is probably fine.

Well, they’ve done that before:

And I doubt they’ll go that route with these controllers for a couple reasons:

[ul]
[li]If it’s entirely dependent on local processing, it will severely restrict what you can do with them.[/li][li]The cost for the controllers could be absurd–might as well use the 3DS as a controller at that point.[/li][/ul]

Speaking of wireless streaming, I found the the article about wireless HDMI technology I was talking about:

Making the controllers not-dumb could also be a potential gameplay hazard if any game wants to use the controller to do something special (and you KNOW Nintendo is going to make a game like Four Swords Adventure, or Suda 51 will make something crazy etc etc). If you thought turbo controllers could be hacky and unfair before… wait until they can actually mess with the data processing.

ETA: Speaking of the GBA connector, I want to see a DS connector this generation. It really was something I sorely missed.

Ok, a sub 1080p screen on the controllers does seem much more feasable. I thought 1080p going by rumors I heard on another forum. Serves me right.

I have seen the wireless Hd tech. There are GTX 460’s with it, but it’s still pricey tech.

I don’t know how they’re going to do it and still make a profit on the hardware unless the console really is going to be a very low end R700 and nothing like the HD 4870.

I don’t understand why they’d go with the 4 series instead of the 5 series. The only thing I can think of is unused fab space they can buy up on the cheap, because the 5 series is faster, more flexible, has lower energy/heat usage, and actually cheaper to make due to the smaller process that’s now fairly established.

This is Nintendo we’re talking about, there’s no way it launches at $400. $300 at the absolute top end, and even then, I think it’ll price drop to $250 very quickly.

I disagree. Nintendo rarely drops their system’s prices quickly (the Wii lasted for years at $250), and the 3DS suggests they’re not afraid of charging a premium. I could definitely see a $350 console coming from them this generation, particularly if they’re going to be bundling in such a controller.

Aha, someone said the rumor earlier would be $400. I was thinking for that price they could afford to have okayish hardware.

The most disappointing thing so far is that a HDD isn’t being rumoured. A small SSD would be a luxury, but to go without a hard disk drive is terrible. Biggest mistake that Microsoft made with the 360.

Earlier in the thread, some people opined that some folks might switch over if Nintendo has a system that gets the other AAA titles out on it. Just a data point that I wouldn’t be interested unless they could release something on par to what’s currently out there on, say, the 360.

The UI is part of it, but it’s the ease of use that I’m after.

Nintendo’s lack of online is pretty easy to use :stuck_out_tongue:

Nintendo’s E3 press conference is about to start so I’m bumping the thread.

It’s funny. We both play video games, but we both have and look for completely different experiences in them.

Wii U. Huh? I guess they thought the Wii brand was too big to give up. It looks interesting, but I need to see a lot more before I put any money down. At least it looks like they’re trying to pay more attention to online play. But we’ve heard that lipservice before.

Any guesses on the price? I’m going with $400. That controller looks expensive plus the upgraded console can’t be cheap. Nintendo doesn’t like to price their systems at a loss, but I think they’re going to have to for this one.

I don’t know about this Wii U thing, not really an exciting unveiling.

Nintendo just put on a clinic of how not to demo a new console. So many unanswered questions, like how much or what’s the online play. If you’re going to transition from selling shovelware to non-gamers to selling real games to gamers, you gotta have an online plan.

I will wait for the hands on reviews. remember thhis is a 2012 release, so I think they will have a bigger release event next year.

Did you hear the roar of the crowd when Batman: Arkham City was announced? While it wasn’t the perfect unveiling like last year’s 3DS announcement, it was pretty good.

Exactly. This is the “it exists and here’s a taste” announcement. Did you notice how there wasn’t a single Nintendo game demoed? Just “interactive experiences.” E3 2012 is when the curtain goes up.

Any specs out yet?

It seems the controllers ARE sub Hd… I assume that;s below 720p.

Let’s say 800x600 for the sake of argument. That’s 2 Megapixels or about the same as 1080p + what? I’m sure the console outputs to 1080p, but will probably only render at 720p like all the other consoles.

That’s some major pixel pushing coming from a cheap consumer product.

Would like to see some specs.

Just the basic outline of what the system can do. Which is still pretty damn impressive: Wii U supports hard drive, new images released | Warp Zoned
