It’s true that the drive from Kansas City to Denver is 8 hours plus. But not sure if it’s worth getting on a plane and then having to deal with renting a car at DIA (Denver International Airport). It’s gonna take all day either way. Sounds like you will be getting a car in KC. Depends a bit on your children I suppose, and how they enjoy (or not) long drives.
April can be a bit dicey on I70 through the Colorado mountains. Ya just never know. Should be fine. An option might be to drive from KC to Colorado Springs. A bit more southern route. Garden of the Gods is just out of Colorado Springs and worth a visit.
A drive through Kansas might be eye opening. Lot’s of new wind farms going up. Much of the central US is just this. Plains for miles.
From there, work your way west. I agree to a previous poster that Mesa Verde is quite cool. And I would bet that 7-8 year old boys would get a real kick out of it. It’s in the south west corner of Colorado.
