(Possibly) Indiscriminate Taste in Movies...

Typically, I like movies that tend to lean towards the quirky, not the summer blockbuster type of crap. I loved movies like * Pi*, Run Lola Run, Repo Man andBeing John Malkovich. As far as directors go, I like Tim Burton, Stanley Kubrick and Jonathan Demme.

I have a great love of bad films, as long as they’re entertainingly bad. I’ve been holding a Bad Film Festival every year since LONG before MST3K. My favorite reaction came in response to The Forbidden Zone, starring Herve Villechaize. It’s the only movie I know of in which Danny Elfman appears (he plays the Devil), in addition to providing the score. My wife begged me to turn this movie off DURING THE OPENING CREDITS. Our guests insisted I keep it on, but in five minutes they asked m to kill it, too. I’m the only person I know who has sat through the whole thing.

If you want a triple bill guaranteed to send people out into the streets, show

The Forbidden Zone
Freaks
Eraserhead

Negligible blood, gore, sex, and violence, but this set has a huge weirdness factor.

Good sweet Jesus someone else who has seen The Forbidden Zone!

Have you also see Shrunken Heads? It rocks!

Wow, either people are missing the point, or you all have vastly different definitions of a Indiscriminate taste in movies.

Swiddles, Three Kings has been widely acclaimed as a excellent movie, many upset it didn’t get Academy recognition. Fight Club was very mainstream and popular, I even enjoyed it but felt it was over-rated.

BratMan, Kubrick (Eyes Wide Shut notwithstanding) is probably safely considered a great film maker. Not that some people don’t get some of his films, especially 2001, but the man has entire college courses dedicated to his films. Safe to say you have discriminating taste in enjoying him.

Sara, ditto the old movies you mentioned. While they can too deep for a casual movie night, they are renowned classics.

FTR, I LOVE starship Troopers and the satire is the main reason…the blood & guts, T & A, and SFX don’t hurt either.

Now, if this thread is gonna be like every other “What’s your favorite movies” thread, disregard my comments, but if you wanna stay on topic lets focus people ;).

My not-so-discriminating tastes include most all High School set comedies. The John Hughes flicks of course. Go, Varsity Blues, Can’t Hardly Wait, American Pie, Dazed and Confused and all the 80’s John Cusack movies. You can be assured that if it has a big party in its plot, I’ll enjoy it.

Wrong. It gets mentioned in practically every Favorite Movie thread. I don’t think I know of any non-Doper who’s said they like it, but perhaps they are all just too embarrassed to admit it.

My no-one-else-like-it movie? I dunno. I have movies that I could swear no one else has ever seen (like Undercover Blues, I’d never even heard of it before I first saw it on video) but if I mention the movie, a dozen people will chime in that they like it, too.

Maybe Weekend at Bernie’s II, I kinda liked it, cheesy as it was. Or Matilda was cute, for a more recent one, although that falls under the “I could swear hardly anyone even saw it” genre mentioned above. Ditto Curly Sue.

Ok, here’s the films I like that I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit:

Mystery Men

Schwartzenegger films (all of them, Commando, Raw Deal, etc, except the last Batman movie and the one where he’s pregnant)

Cheesey horror flicks, the lower the budget and the suckier the acting, the better. Those just crack me up.

Ed Wood movies. Nothing like a cold six pack and Ed Wood to brighten your day!

And although some people won’t think this is indiscriminate, I think I’ve seen every Jackie Chan movie. Can’t wait to see Shanghai Noon.

I just finished watching Mystery Men. I loved it! Really! If you liked The Tick, you’ll love it!

Talk about a waste of keystrokes.

In all my past Stupid Movie Nights, one movie stands out as bad above all others… Invasion Earth: The Aliens Are Here. This movie is so bad it is funny.

I loved ‘Blair Witch Project’. There, I said it. Although I have spoken to many who have seen it, none claim to have been frightened by it except me. Maybe they didn’t grow up near the woods.

And I sorely miss ‘Mystery Science Theatre 3000’.

<screaming from the mountaintops>
I LOVE THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT!

Not only that, but I get really pissed off when people criticize it from a place of ignorance. Fools!

My “guilty secret” movie is The Brady Bunch. I loved it. Laughed my butt off.

The movie that I LOVE, can’t get enough of, would watch it every week if time allowed, and that NO ONE ELSE UNDERSTANDS MY ATTRACTION TO … JAWS. Give me this movie over that “Deep Blue Sea” crap any day. Spielberg knew what he was doing, and it shows. Deliciously scary!

Now, because I am a movie buff, I need to name all the movies that people referred to as “that one where …”
BratMan: “Junior”
Nacho4Sara: “The Great Outdoors”

CalMeacham: Do you mean the very old movie “Freaks”? I’ve heard much about this movie and always wanted to see it. Not exactly easy to find on the shelves of your local video store.

By the way, all those interested in a discussion of Kubrick and Eyes Wide Shut should mosey on over to IMHO where a heated discussion is taking place!

A Night at the Roxbury was a great movie. It was so funny! I saw it at the $2 theatre because the commercials amused me (I hadn’t seen the characters before), and I was surprised by how funny it was. I bought it on video for $10, and all the friends I cajoled into watching it agreed with me.

Groundhog Day is also a very funny movie. The Man Who Knew Too Little is another Bill Murray movie that is incredibly funny.
