Possibly the coolest thing on my desk now

Color doesn’t seem to matter. My black and white one works just fine. I have them next to each other now, nodding in unison.

**JSexton ** That is such a goofy delicious object!

I just love optical illusions.

They have one at the local science museum that fools me every time - a face mask that’s inside out and lit from below. Because of the reverse shadows you *always *view it as conves even after you feel for yourself that it’s concave.

Yep - on the same site as the dragon illusion there’s a video of one of those faces. Cool stuff.

love it, love it!!!
Made the mistake of having the face inside out at first, but easily corrected it. Works great.

Here are some tips to make it work. First, it needs to be lighted directly (not just diffused room lighting), from above and a bit behind. Too much light into the cavity of the face destroys the illusion.

Second, try closing both eyes for a few seconds, then just opening one. I guess it keeps your brain from storing the depth-perception information.

Third, . . . uh, I don’t have a #3. I guess that means, Hi, Opal!

I did mine inside out at first too.

If you’re looking straight down on it, from the top, you should only see white, the face part is toward the inside.

I can’t get mine to work! Or, at least, not like the one in the video. It will work a bit if I cross my eyes ever so slightly or use only one eye. Maybe it takes a day or two?

Hold it out at least arm’s length and use one eye. Try not to have any shadows cast on it since that ruins the illusion. Stare at it with one eye until it appears to be 3D and slowly turn it back and forth and up and down.

Ah! I had it with one eye, but it was ruined when I used both. I must say, that disappointed me. Maybe if I did it longer?

Many thanks, Mr. Blue Sky.

No optical illusions here, but I do have a trebuchet on my desk. It’ll fling a piece of hard candy about 35 feet.

I am on a business trip right now but within 24 hours of my return home, I will buy one of these. I can’t wait.

Haj

Don’t bother squinting. Assuming you’ve made yours correctly, the best way to get the illusion effect is to put it on a high shelf, and walk in an arc about 5-7 feet away from it. The idea is to get far enough away that you can’t see the folds.

I’ve set mine up so that it’s in my line of sight the moment I enter the front door. It follows me as I walk across to my room. Spooookyyyy…

::pleased as punch::

I wonder if I could get a king-size one made at a print shop if I took the PDF file in on CD? That would be cool.

I am going to make a small one first. I have on every dominant eye so it sounds like this is one illusion that will work better for me, for once.

Glad everyone’s enjoying the little fella.

I love the idea of making one a good two feet tall! Hmm…ponders the print shop down the street.

Thanks again.

It’s almost time to pass it on to my mother’s office… I’ll miss my staring dragon but she’ll get not only the URL and printed page, but also the finished product.

And she’ll think it was MY idea.

Don’t you love mothers?

Nice. I think this may be my stocking stuffer of choice for this year. A nice color copy, a sheet of directions, some tape, and a pair of scissors. I’m relishing the idea of a dozen people all sprawled around making little dragons. And how cool will it be to have a row of these things all staring at you?
