Perhaps we could start giving letters if our clues go unsolved for too long? Like this: Answer expresses regret about leading character in Great Debates (6) \_ R \_ \_ \_ \_ That’s what they do over at the Grey Labyrinth puzzle forum, where there’s a cryptic crossword thread that started in the year 2000 and is still going strong :eek: [ETA] of course, now I see that **Biotop** got that one anyway. ---

Some even say dictionaries and thesauruses are not allowed. Meh to all that, I say. Use what you can if you get stuck. I just find I derive more personal satisfaction if I don’t have to use aids. Though you probably could have gotten it without the aid. I came up with this one by thinking Gingerbread Man would be an interesting answer. I than tried to see if I could come up with a way to anagram it. “Grandma” came right out leaving me with “ingebre”. I had pondered “bring”-ing e.e. cummings somewhere into it, but I couldn’t think of an elegant way to word such a thing without mentioning cummings, and then I’d have extra words. I then noticed that I had “beer” and “gin” just staring me in the face. The wording of the clue fell into place. I was a bit disappointed with Gin and Gingerbread starting the same, but I figured if I put gin in the middle, it would be a little less obvious that one of the words technically wouldn’t have to be anagrammed. Putting it as the first part of the clue would have actually allowed it to be solved as a charade/anagram combo rather than a pure anagram. ---
