umph. I had a fresh ATMB thread all typed out, but thought better of it.
Point is, they are still closing threads and posting that fucking link without bothering to actually read it to check the thread violated the rules.
POST-PADDING IS A MYTH!! GET IT??
Oh, please. There are posts that share information, ask questions, are part of a conversation or dialog. Then there are posts that say, “Oh, yeah?” or simply cough, that are in place for no useful purpose except to tie up the system.
Deliberate attempts to sabotage the hamsters is a bannable offense. Posting a dozen posts that have no content other than a question mark or an exclamation point or single word… well, IMHO, that’s a deliberate attempt attempt to sabotage the system, to slow the system down for everyone, and is a prime example of being a jerk.
Imagine you are in an actual room having a group conversation, and one persopn raises his hand, and well called on, said, “Nothing.” And then does it again. And again. And again. You’d be damn pissed at that person for wasting your time and the group’s time. That’s the classic definition of troll, or jerk, as you choose.
C K Dexter Haven you really believe people are ‘deliberately sabotaging the system’ in these cases??
That’s… unbelievable. No one comes to a ‘fluf’ thread and thinks "I’ll post in this thread because it will make the system slower’. No one comes to the thread thinking ‘I want my post count bigger. I know it’s a jerkish thing to do but I’ll post some shit to increase my post count’. They post in those threads in the spirit of fun. They may be a waste of space but I think calling them deliberate attempts to sabotage the system, or post-count-parties is far-fetched to say the least.
To further amplify, we have been having problems with the server over the past couple of weeks – a situation I don’t think will be easily fixed and certainly not corrected any time soon. Without the accelerator we had in place earlier (it doesn’t work with the current version of php advances in hackerdom forced us to make), board performance is compromised as it is.
We’ve closed a lot of simply crap threads over the past few days because, well, dammit, it’s a burden to the server as well as to the staff that has to clean up behind this drivel.
We don’t expect every post to be a jewel, but we do expect some real thought behind it. We expect better of you, all of you.
We appreciate that you want to spend time with us and like having you around, but not every synapse is worthy of a post. A bit of discernment could be applied and we’d all be happier, all the way around.
Here is the crux of the issue. IMO, the Staff should keep closing these idiotic threads. What they shouldn’t do is try to divine the intent of the poster for posting to them. Maybe they’re trying to reach 5,000 posts as quickly as possible, maybe they’re trying to cause problems with board speed or maybe they’re just very easily amused. Don’t call it “post count padding” or accuse long term members of trolling. A simple “Too stupid to live. Closed” will suffice.
Yeah, in the “spirit of fun,” let’s toss a pumpkin off the highway bridge onto the oncoming cars. In the “spirit of fun,” let’s see how much gin our new fraternity brother can drink before he passes out. In the “spirit of fun,” let’s start a computer virus and see how far it will spread.
It’s never deliberate, oh, no. It’s always an accidental unforeseen gosh-golly-gee we didn’t MEAN to kill the dog, we were just having a “little fun.”
Nonetheless, the consequences are based on the results, not on the intention.
When I said, “Deliberate attempts to sabotage the hamsters is a bannable offense”, I presume that’s clear and understood. You didn’t like my next remark, perhaps you’d feel better if I amended it to say:
Right, So mods and admins are broadening their scope of what thread should be closed in order to ease the load on a recently bandwidth-troubled board. I can live with that.
Wouldn’t it have been easier to just explain it in those terms in the first place? I’m all for getting rid of pointless wastage if a good reason is given, and that is a good reason from TubaDiva.
Thanks, Haj, for a reply that makes sense and an idea that is do able.
Thanks, Admins, for the snark. I, too, expect better of you. But the server info is interesting, and is news to me, possibly to many of us.
If there is anything else worth while to add, have at it. But, to avoid sending this thread to the Pit or having the nameless one find a way into this conversation (since he does seem to stalk my threads at times), I request this thread be closed.
I was simply repeating information about a situation that has been in place for several weeks now and discussed in this forum.
Common sense should tell you that when board performance is adversely affected, you need to be thoughtful, considering how your actions might add to the burden of an already laboring system.
And we’ve always had a dubious view of threads that look to us like nothing more than post count padding, this is not new business. We’ve had a recent uptick in these threads and had to take steps to solve the problem.
