In the true spirit of the thread’s title, “Post five statements you truly believe but expect most of the board to disagree with.” 1. Heavy/large/obese people are not physically attractive. 2. Food served at chain restaurants, as a whole, isn’t any better or worse than independent restaurants. 3. With limited exceptions, older black-and-white movies generally suck compared to more contemporary movies. Theatrical acting, too dramatic, cheesy violin/string-heavy scores that mostly sound the same, etc. Don’t get me started on musicals or choreographed dancing/swimming with hundreds of identical smiling showgirls. 4. Fedoras _aren’t_ awesome. Think you’re the exception, and you look good wearing one? No, not if you’re under 70 years old, or not a Cuban-American or Italian-American grandfather. For the most part, [they’re part of the uniform for socially inept geeks](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4QBRgyitFs). 5. As a whole, SDMB members aren’t necessarily smarter, hipper, more informed, or better endowed than the general population. ---

Just one (1) for this post: Religious texts, Old and New Testaments both included, are chock full of bullshit, and are mostly written by bullshitters. Yes, I know, we can all get on board with that. Here’s the part you that you won’t agree with: We need to stop being upset about that fact. The thing is, ancient texts are \*all \*full of bullshit. Although some writers (like Thucydides) got the memo earlier than others, telling the facts as they happened seems to be a peculiarly modern idea. With Roman historians, it’s sucking up to your favorite emperor and shamelessly slandering the others. With Herodotus, it’s making up crazy numbers for Persian armies and telling tall tales about Egypt. Ancient mythologies (including, say, the Greek myths, which we love) are centuries of bullshitting filtered through an endless game of telephone. And, yes, in the New Testament it’s whacky tales of miracles and supernatural events. Bullshit is par for the course. Reading any ancient text is looking at history through a fog of bullshitting, and the only difference is how thick it is. For something like the Bible \*not \*to be dripping with the stuff would have been nothing short of shocking. So cut it some slack. ---

1. Changing minimum wage will never achieve income equality. Only setting maximum earning from someone else’s labor will. 2. People who spend $5000 a year on entertainment but complain about $2000 a year insurance premiums have their priorities backwards. 3. There is only one universe, so stop this nonsense about multiple/alternate universes. The definition of the universe is all matter/energy that exists so if your alternate reality exists, it’s part of the universe. 4. Mental state should not be considered when finding guilt or innocence, but should rather be reserved for sentencing. The victim is still dead and declaring the murderer innocent trivializes that. I would prefer to see “Guilty mitigated by mental defect” rather than “Not guilty by reason of mental defect”. The crime did happen. 5. Neither chocolate nor vanilla is the best ice cream flavor. Butterscotch is. ---

The last episode of _LOST_ ranks among the best ever. Only the _X-Files_ finale exceeds it. _Heroes_ didn’t go off the rails - the fans just expected it to turn out differently and were disappointed when it went another direction. _Highlander 2_ is a fine movie, a true testament to the worthiness of sequels. _Forrest Gump_ deserved the Best Picture win over _Pulp Fiction_ and may, in fact, be the best (well, weirdest) movie of the 1990s. _Galaxy Quest_… gah, that sucked. Not as bad as _Office Space_ though. ---
