1. The SDMB’s putative main rule; i.e., don’t be a jerk, is enforced in inverse proportion to a poster’s longevity on the board. In other words, longtime members get away with antisocial behavior that would get a new member fast-tracked to Bantville. ---

1. My taste in music is far superior to your taste in music. 2. “Starship Troopers” was a borderline genius film, whereas the book was unreadable tosh. 3. There is absolutely nothing wrong with aspartame. 4. Most people harping on about “Rape Culture” either simply hate men or are using it to push an agenda that actively works against those that are fighting for equality of the sexes. 5. The Straight Dope isn’t even close to the “smartest, hippest people on the planet, plus a few total dipsticks”. However most of the users like to smugly think they are better and far more intelligent than the average person. ---

- Tumblr “social justice warriors” are basically just jerking each other off. If they really want to change the issues they’re so concerned about, they need to start real petitions, send letters (not e-mails), publish articles, write books, GET INVOLVED. Not sit behind a computer parroting their party lines back and forth all day. - We were better off not knowing as much about celebrities and other public figures than we do now. If my favorite celebrity happens to be a complete womanizer, I don’t wanna know. Can’t I just enjoy them for who they appear to be? Why do we need to know everyone’s dirty details? - Obesity has some genetic/chemical component, but that doesn’t mean you’re free to sit on your ass and eat ice cream all day. (I lost nearly 25lbs since September - it can be done, people.) - I would probably save my cat over a complete stranger if it came down to it. - Abortion is a necessary evil. ---

1. I think climate change’s because foe/cause is air travel. Unfortunately, it will be a long time before we would curb/fix that. 2. Sexuality is just superficiality compartmentalized. 3. Religion and religious beliefs, even here, get a free pass too often without being questioned. 4. That autism has been overdiagnosed and/or needs to be redefined. 5. That this board should have a [CITATION NEEDED] button to click on other posts. ---

1. Modern widespread/constant media coverage has destroyed US politics. Politicians are now way to worried that one vote or sentence will drop their rating, to be affective at their real jobs. Let’s get rid of sound-bites. 2. Mr Obama wasn’t really supposed to win a second term. He was put forward as the ground-breaking first black president, and it was expected he would be taken down hard in 2012. He was a lightning rod. Useful, necessary, but meant to be burnt up. 3. The US will continue to lose ground as the most influential country in the world, and THAT’S OK. Once we are past that, we can go back to living life without worrying about losing that status. 4. Most TV shows should be created with a planned end of life. 2 or 3 seasons, and it’s done. After that, most TV shows have run out of decent storylines, and go downhill anyway. 5. Pets aren’t people. No human is a “pet parent”. No pet is expecting a Christmas present. No animal’s life is more important than any human’s life. I include food, product testing and pets. Yes, we should no inflict pain if it’s not necessary, but if testing products on rabbits saves human suffering, then let me hold Hoppy for you. 6. 99.44% of standing ovations are idiotic and unearned. ---

This thread is, by far, one of the most interesting threads I have ever read on here. 1. Metallica’s music got better beginning with the Load album. Their old stuff is good, but not as good as their newer stuff 2. In America, racism and race related incidences would be almost non-existent if the race (ANY race) in question wouldn’t bring it up every time something happened to them 3. Forrest Gump is the best made movie (writing/acting/directing/sound/etc.) of the last 50 years 4. Christianity is the only religion on Earth that can still be openly mocked without any penalty, and that is wrong 5. 99.99 percent of people who criticize religion have a fundamental misunderstanding of what it means to be religious ---

1. Beer tastes terrible. Yes, even your favorite brand. All beer. 2. Dwight Gooden is the greatest pitcher of all time. 3. The endings to _Lost_ and the Dark Tower series were brilliant (and in part because of its ending, the former is one of the top 5 television shows ever to air) 4. The Walt Disney Corporation produces outstanding creative work, and has been on the whole a net positive force in society for most of its existence. 5. The NBA deliberately and outright fixed the outcome of Game 6 of the 2002 Western Conference Finals via officiating biased toward the Los Angeles Lakers. ---

I know better than this, I know better than this…what the heck - my views as seen through the filter of my experiences and I don’t give a rip what anyone else thinks of them: 1. God exists, Jesus died and was resurrected, heaven and hell are real (though not necessarily tangible) 2. the US, led by the EU, is becoming a culture of victims with a warped concept of personal responsibility, content to let the government be their nanny 3. those who would give up freedom for security deserve neither 4. government forced income redistribution is never good 5. “Society” owes you nothing. You owe society everything. Humankind would be better off if people would get over themselves and work toward the betterment of all. That was fun! ---

1. I am not convinced that tattooing and piercing are different behaviors than cutting. 2. In the 2008 financial crisis, both Bush and Obama should have left it alone. We would have had a short, sharp recession, followed by a robust recovery. They saved us from short-term pain, but gave us long-term stagnation. 3. a. Gay couples should be free to marry. 4. b. Gay married couples should be free to adopt children. 5. c. Unmarried people, of any orientation, should be forbidden to have custody of minors. 6. Medical marijuana is for pansies. We should legalize ALL drugs, and let natural selection take its course. Those who practice self-indulgence would die. Those who practice self-discipline would live. After they buried a lot of their elders, and a few of their friends, the next generation of teenagers would grow up, sadder but wiser. 7. I have yet to see a remedy for global warming that has a chance of succeeding. If you don’t enforce your scheme on India, China, and the developing countries, you are doomed to failure. If you do enforce it on those countries, you will condemn billions of people to poverty and starvation. It is simply not possible to feed 7 billion people without fossil fuels. ---

People can cite lots of anecdotes about nuclear families that were rotten, and single-parent families that were wonderful. But, overall, in general, in the long run, children whose parents are married tend to have lower mortality rates than children whose parents are not married. ETA: I am presuming that close relatives will get preferential treatment in adoption cases. I am not a complete ogre.
