Post Oscar Thoughts (other than Will Smith)

All the Oscar recaps in the news say that Ariana deBose is the first openly gay woman of color to win. It’s the qualifier “of color”…this implies that there was previously an openly gay white woman winner. I’m at a loss to think who that might have been.

…well, it is debatable when Jodie Foster would have been considered openly gay.

I think Linda Hunt was openly lesbian before winning Best Supporting Actress. And there is a question if Angelina Jolie was openly bisexual before winning hers.

That seems like the obvious thing. You can have a little bit of that, but just put one comedian in charge. A professional standup comic knows how to MC; it’s part of the job and something they all learn how to do in terms of fitting a few gags into the available time to make the show hit the right run. Having little skits and whatnot is just too impactful on the pace of the show.

Well, they don’t want to just say “openly gay” and offend someone who could say “Hey, what about me?” like Jodie Foster. Was she out? I don’t know. Was she out when she won the first Oscar or the Second? She has two, right? Kind of not something you should open an argument with Jodie Foster on. And did you check the list of Oscar winners in ALL categories? It’s easy to remember who won the acting awards but did a gay woman win something for Documentary Short Subject? Makeup? Song? Going too far in crowing about this seems like a terrific way to inadvertently insult someone who won an Oscar twenty years ago and would feel rightly slighted.

And Hattie McDaniel was of color, but not openly gay.
