And they got what they wanted, too. The Art Institute in San Francisco has [canceled](http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/03/30/BAGNVSRME.DTL) the one person art show of artist Adel Abdessemed titled “Don’t Trust Me.” Not because of the controversy surrounding the video in the show, which depicts the killing of several animals by bludgeoning with sledge hammers, but because among the complaints that the Institute was receiving were specific threats to specific individuals, including threats to take children and bludgeon them to death. This doesn’t change that the description of the video does leave me thinking that the charges by some animal protection groups that the animals were killed for art is credible. The linked article reports that the artist claimed he simply recorded normal execution methods at a farm in Mexico, which I also find credible. As a piece of art, I’d have no desire to see it, nor would I have gone to the show. But to resort to death threats against the workers at the Institute, or their children, is vile, and does more to blacken the whole of the animal rights movement than any possible benefit that would derive from stopping this show. I’m trying very hard to keep from making this a screed against some of the more infamous animal rights advocacy groups. Let’s just leave it at this: arson, death threats, and bombings are not valid forms of protest. They are crimes, and rightfully prosecuted as such. ---
