Yeah, I said on the board that I would never get remarried or even date if my then marriage ended.

It did.

I did.

I’m not saying never to anything!

1. Set foot in Oklahoma. It is a terrible place full of awful people.

2. Buy an American car. I don’t care if they are light years better than they used to be, they screwed me out of way too much time, effort, and money. “Foreign” cars built in American factories are OK.

3. Gamble at a casino. There’s a hundred bucks I wish I could get back. What a boring, depressing experience.

4. Attend a professional sporting event. What a boring, loud, interminable experience.

5. Hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back in one day. It was sort of a fun accomplishment, but in the future I’ll take a couple of days and actually enjoy it.

6. Yardwork. Professionals do a better job than I ever could, for incredibly little money.

1- Cook stirfry with my bottle of diet Coke right next to the bottle of Worchestershire sauce. One swig from the wrong bottle was plenty.

2- Get married or have children. I’m happy with the wife and children I have plus I’m too old to do either again.

3- Change my own oil. Too damn messy and the cost savings is minor.

4- Shovel my driveway. Snow blowers are much easier on the heart and back.

5- Drink alcohol. Became allergic about 25 years ago.

6- Climb Sleeping Bear sand dune. Great view but oh so hard a climb.

7- Jump off a diving board. The side of the pool is plenty high enough for me.

8- Go to Cedar Point. Standing in line for hours- no thanks.

9- Vote for a Republican for any office. I used to carefully weigh the race for each office, and tried to split my ballot somewhat No more.

My dad is the ultimate handy man, so he always did this, saving a bundle in the process. I found it to be a miserable job, dealing with rusty, seized-up bolts and trying to wiggle exhaust components in/out of very snug places. I finally said “never again” when I fleck of metal embedded in my cornea scratched the everloving fuck out of my eyelid, requiring a trip to the ER to get it out.

you should add ‘doing hazardous work without proper safety precautions’ to your list.

Eat beets.

Live with another person as a spouse/partner/roommate (I have a spouse whom I love, but maintaining a household with him is miserable. If I ever enter into another relationship, we’re having separate homes. The only way I’m living with another person again is if that person is my full-time, live-in aide, housekeeper, etc.).

Maintain a relationship with anyone who makes me feel like my ex did.

Thanks, yes. That was indeed a learning day and you’re right, working without PPE is, in fact on my “never again” list. I’m big on safety gear now: ear protection, eye protection, steel-toed boots, p100 respirator, etc. all get used when needed.

But I’m still not working on a car exhaust ever again.

1. Smoke.

2. Try sailing (near-death experience).

3. Drink until I’m staggering drunk.

I’ll never eat raw oysters or escargot again.

I’ve tried both, and while neither was unpleasant, they weren’t all that great, either. There are plenty of other things that I enjoy more for my money.

1. Live in a communal hippie house. Did that for a year in my 20s. I got a lot out of the experience, but I won’t do it again.

2. Do lab work in any field of molecular biology. (I admire people who can do it happily and well, but I’m just not one of them. It was a major relief to admit that and be done with both the work itself and the unhappiness that came with it.)

3. Be anyone’s employee, if I can help it at all. (Working for myself has been AWESOME, and business is going well, both financially and personally.)

4. Order bulk copies for delivery from Office Depot–at least, until they fix their online ordering system. At the moment, things there are pretty messed up.

>
> 2. **Undertake a major home renovation myself.** I did my basement and my kitchen, that’s enough for one lifetime. Getting too old to swing a sledge or lay a floor. Bathroom needs doin’, but I’ll hire that one out.
>
> 3. **Get up on a roof.** I was never crazy about doing it when I was younger, have even less desire to climb up there now. The last thing I need is two broken legs.

All of these things. Well…might get on the flat roof to shovel it off if we ever have another streak of 30+" of snow with no melting in between.

Gave up changing the oil when I had a full container of oil once and no one wanted to take it to recycle. (I don’t remember what we used to do with oil when I was a kid – I suspect we dumped it out back, alas.)

so…original nevers…

I’m reasonably sure I’m never going to use a film camera again, and I’m even more sure that I’m never going to put in any darkroom time, either black and white or color. Life is too short to spend hours in a darkroom. By yourself, at least.

Given the state of my back lately, my days of backpacking up Mt. Washington (never plentiful) are over. _Maybe_ I’m good for a few more day hikes, but tents and sleeping bags? Nopers. In related news, my days of playing the hero while helping friends move are over. You want something that weighs over 30 pounds moved? Hire someone with a fully functioning spinal column to do it.

Roller coasters. Unless I suddenly develop a burning desire to experience motion sickness and nausea for a full 24 hours, those are on the list.

This falls into the “probably never” category, but except in the direst depths of sucrose depletion, I’m not going to buy and eat a Hershey’s chocolate bar. Life is too short to eat whatever-the-hell-that-is-but-I-know-it’s-not-chocolate.

And, sadly, learn to play a musical instrument is on this list. I’ve tried a few times, but it’s just not one of those things I have an aptitude or passion for.

Finally, hopefully, I’ll never again drive by a boatyard and say “Wow, that’s a cool sailboat. How much?” Oh, who am I kidding?

I will also never go to Disneyland again. I’ve seen it once; once is enough.

ETA: **Finagle** , we’ve sworn off helping people move, too (and we don’t ask for help, either). We helped one final move to even everything up, and after that, we don’t help and we don’t ask - we just pay for movers.

Lessee…
As mentioned, I’ll never change my own oil again. I’m proud I _can_ do such maintenance tasks, but the cost isn’t worth the hassle. Similarly, plugs, coolant, etc. Filling up the washer reservoir and adding oil is my limit.
Ride Amtrak in coach - if you get a room, it’s great, and I highly recommend it, but I can’t sleep in a chair anymore.
Move from one continent to another - not that’s it’s likely to come up again, but take all the pain of moving and multiply it by a factor of ten.
Buy cheap toilet paper - the good stuff isn’t so much more expensive that it’s a burden. Actually, that applies to _cheap_ just about anything (as opposed to just inexpensive); tools, computer components, off-brand snacks and cola. Not worth it.
