I do technical support for a company that makes research pharmaceuticals. Basically I tell people how to use our products properly… and try to fix the messes they get themselves into. ---

I manage, provision & troubleshoot high speed data pipes for a well-known fortune-50 company that shall remain nameless, let’s just say it rhymes with “smell atlantic”. My job is to troubleshoot data traffic issues, carrier outages & switch configurations. I spend a lot of time on the phone with major corporate accounts trying to make them understand why I can’t bring a T3/OC3/OC48/OC192/OC256 line down for testing just because their 56k frame relay circuit is down (an OC256 = 13.2 Gbps or about 170,000 56k customers). Resulting from a recent merger with another company who’s name is an anagram of GET, I will belong to a brand-spanking new company that (I heard but haven’t confirmed) will start out in the fortune-10. **So why in the hell is my internet connection so damn slow??** :mad: Breaking News! My company’s union contract expires on midnight 8/5 and the scum-sucking corporate hogs seem to think that absolutely no changes are deserved in a new contract. That seems reasonable- we’re wallowing in record-breaking profits this year. :rolleyes: So don’t be shocked when you can’t load the Straight Dope on Sunday the 6th! ---

I am a call-coordinator. I work for a large software company taking calls and processing e-mails for the Customer Support Department. I am also going to community college part-time in the evenings. I’m vacillating between English and Psychology as a major. Of course, it’s going to take me about 7 years to get to the university level at the rate I’m going, so I’ll have plenty of time to decide! ---

I’m a university graduate with a degree in History and Greek and Roman Civilisation. With this degree I got a Job in a Cyber Café (well used or what?). I spend my days surfin’ the net for free, taking part in the SDMB and playing games…AND GETTING PAID FOR IT!!! Unfortunately customers keep interupting me. ---

I’m a sedimentary geologist, which means that when I’m lucky I get to play outside all day and hit rocks with a hammer. It’s great for getting frustrations out. 😃 But lately I’ve been learning the nuts and bolts of computer climate models for paleoclimate reconstructions. Ceejaytee - Do you work for MBCo? I’m sharing unprotected electrons with lots of tech-types here. Is it safe? I’m one of the few here who has to resort to accessing SD on my own time as opposed to while my meter is running. Oh well, while you entrust your safety to the crew on your next airline flight, think about how many newspapers a pilot can read in one day. My record is five.
