I don’t know **Mtgman** ’s political leanings all that well myself but would you include him in this assessment? He’s also been mentioned in regards (oops) to his “Enjoy, Steven” sign-offs.

If includable legitimately, never mind. If not, why not?

While I’d like to take credit for at least a shred of hipness – and while I do like more rap and hip-hop than you’d probably guess – Mos Def himself is an artist I’m not familiar with. I just meant the comment as a sort of faux-hip way of saying ‘most definitely’. 😉

His sign-off been mentioned in conversations about the issue, but no one’s gotten their panties in a major bunch about it so far as I recall. Mostly it’s just the incongruity of “Enjoy” when there’s nothing there to enjoy that seems annoying to people rather than the mere fact that he posts a sig.

I see.

So you’re saying that, even though several posters here (which subject has nothing to do with politics) and in other threads on this subject have definitely stated that they’re bothered by the _incongruity_ of **Shodan** ’s sign-off even in debates and outright arguments, just as they’ve said the same about **Mtgman** ’s, one _has_ to be about political differences and the other due to reactions based on simple annoyance.

Okay.

So this is just another example of liberals always finding an opportunity to pick on conservatives. Where have I heard that line of argument before?

You know as well as I do that **Shodan’s** sign-off has been a much greater source of aggravation around here than has **Mtgman’s** “Enjoy”, and that those doing the complaining are largely those with whom he’s had political arguments. In my experience, about the only times **Mtgman’s** sign-off is even mentioned is in a thread where somebody’s already bitching about **Shodan’s**.

We’re not handing out warnings, we’re just asking that everyone who uses signatures (regardless of whether the signature is automatically filled in by the board software or manually typed) follow the same rule.

I guess my question “Why?” still stands. I’ve been doing this for NINE years here. I’ve NEVER had a complaint and except for a small group of people in that Vox Valente guy’s thread, I’ve never actually seen a complaint about it before.

Why make this change? (Again, I’ll accept it and follow it). Yes, several posters have bitched about it, but a larger number don’t seem to care one way or the other. What prompted this change? (I realize you don’t have to explain it to me, but I’m curious). It seems very arbitrary to me–I realize that from the “a sig is a sig” POV, there’s a consistency thing, but again, it hasn’t been a problem for nine years.

Wait a sec…you let the holidays interfere with your SDMB duties?! That’s COMPLETELY unacceptible. I demand you give back your cushy Admin Salary, the Admin Chair with the magic finger massage unit, the ever-filled coffee cup, etc.

I wish you would reconsider. I really don’t see the harm in “Regards, Shodan”

In addition to the fact that you don’t know what I know or don’t know, have you even considered the fact that, between **Shodan** ’s 12,572 posts and **Mtgman** ’s 4,597, that higher number might have provided many more opportunities to see the first’s sign-off and for posters to be annoyed by it?

I don’t really care either way whether I see sigs or not (I have them turned off; of the two posters I’ve mentioned I could do without seeing them), but I just wanted to call you on your habit of finding a way to get in a jab regarding libs vs. cons every chance you get – even when it’s has nothing to do with the subject at hand. Although this is a left-leaning board for sure, not everything here is politically motivated.

I thought this was all kicked into high gear by

Valete,
Vox Imperatoris

He started this thread, and as always, the Pit thread turns around on the OP. I don’t remember it being directed at Shodan in particular in this thread, or the rule being enforced because of him. Care to tell us why you think this is about him? That just doesn’t conform with my recollections at all.

The only problem with this is, it has a lot to do with the subject at hand.

**Shodan’s** posts are more controversial than **Mtgman’s** and you know perfectly well that post count has nothing to do with the number of complaints they garner. You could reverse their post count and “Regards, Shodan” would still come in for many more indignant and angry criticisms than “Enjoy, Steven”.

**Rubystreak** , you may be surprised to hear me say this but you are right, the OP started this thread and it has turned on him, plus there’s been a separate thread on his sig.

But in my opinion the driving force behind the hubub is the “powder keg” referred to above which the OP’s sig appears to have set off, with the powder keg being the long term result of anger and frustration on the part of **Shodan’s** adversaries around here to having been unable to get rid of his sign-off.

Iow, **Vox** provided the impetus but **Shodan** was the ultimate target.

IMHO, of course. 😉

No, **Hostile** , you’re not missing out on anything, and I realize that statement I’d made was not really clear. What I wanted to say is that the English-speaking countries didn’t “negotiate” a “Queen’s English” (now referred to as “BBC English”) until much later. There are various “academies” about English usage now, but Spain and France did it much earlier.

As to modern usage, it’s more a question of writing/spelling than anything else. Nobody in Madrid can change the way someone in Barranquilla says, “E’te que e’ta p’ a’tra” any more than someone at the BBC can tell me how to pronounce “progress.”

My real point is that there was no recognized authority. So we (English writers) use, for example, the letters _ **ou** _ to represent five different sounds:

C.F.:

\*cough
tough
though
through
ouch
\*

An academy early on might have prevented this, but it all comes down to economics and global relations. English is a mongrel language. And it will always be that way.

I really don’t worry so much about the English language as I do about the U.S. dollar.

And that’s why I can’t stand **Hostile Dialect**.

Because he doesn’t speak BBC English.

Well, it used to be Jesus H. Christ on a pogo stick. I’ve got the pogo stick now. 😃

Maybe I’ll make an MPSIMS thread on “what the hell have I been doing for the past five years” or whatever, but my life has been so boring the thread will probably be blank.
