Now that I think of it, I’ve got a few things to try.

Let’s get rid of the nonfunctional tags:

Now, let’s try moving the font tags outside the quote tags:

> I was laughing so hard at this point I had to run for the bathroom.

Conclusion: Font tags have to go inside the quote tags. If you do it the other way, you get something like this:

Let’s laugh with the following poster:

>
> I was laughing so hard at this point I had to run for the bathroom.

even though the font didn’t apply to the quote.

It doesn’t get smaller for a lot of people, including me. If you want it to _reliably_ be small, do it like this:
