It doesn’t seem to be a problem on most other boards I visit.

Maybe those boards don’t care enough to worry and/or are low profile enough to not be noticed.

The Reader is a newspaper and more subject to violations being noticed.

Fair use, **pat**.

Agreed, though, that it will never happen here. The vocal academic culture of the SDMB will see to that.

Am I a Luddite if I believe that _others_ shouldn’t enjoy books with illustrations, music videos, or television?

Things will never change here. NEVER. No avatars, no images, no forum upgrades, no new features. It’s pointless to ask for them or debate their need or value. The beard-stroking pseudointellectuals here want the place to feel like a BBS from the 1980s, and that’s what they’ve got.

While you’re welcome to your opinion, I believe I can disabuse you of this view. I was here a month or so before the pictures option was set to “off”, though I’ve never had an ‘official’ rule with the Dope beyond Member, and if **Ed Zotti** and the three original Admins. (who are all still with us) had bandwidth or copyright concerns back in '99, they never mentioned it to the membership at large. But there were early and recurrent posts of truly obnoxious images, by people seemingly with no concern for others, aqnd they put their foot down over it. Bandwidth and copyright concerns simply bolster the argument against turning the pictures capability back on.

The rest of the Internets has those things you want. I ask for one haven in the middle of a sea of horrible icons and smileys and avatars.

And users have the option of turning then off. But that doesn’t matter, because the vocal minority of beardstrokers don’t want _anyone_ to see avatars or images.

Personally, I like the Giraffeboards approach, where images are limited to one board. It’ll never happen here, though, because even just knowing that there’s someplace on the board where there is a discussion of photo techniques accompanied by examples would detract from the rarefied intellectual discussion on feces texture, vaginal odor, and American Idol that we Mensa members now stroke our beards over.

Yes, but you conveniently quoted me out of context. Here is the reason why I believe the first excuse they give is just lip service (I’m being generous here and giving them the benefit of the doubt—the other alternative is that TPTB aren’t even aware of it):
“They can just turn them off. It’s not that difficult. And if they are really worried about losing their jobs over something like that, perhaps they shouldn’t be surfing at work at all.”

FYI, with the Greasemonkey script I mention in [this thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=14043206), your post above appears [like this](http://i.imgur.com/fXgW8.png) to me 🙂

How’s your Stanford-Binet doing? 160, 165? A bit on the low side today, huh? Yeah, I know the feeling. Did you solve Hilbert’s sixteenth problem yet, or just want to know why some zits pop and others emerge like little worms?
