Glad this thread doesn’t let people name names or I’d get into trouble. Pet peeves:

1. Referring to family members by some cute little name (“hubby”, “li’lbro”) rather than saying “my X” or “my Y”. (For some reason it doesn’t bug me as much when they have actually been given a consistent proper name e.g. “Mr Z” or “Ms Y”.)

2. Highly cutesy writing, guys and gals, as if we’re all old friends! {{{{Big hugs to all of you!!!}}}} \<3 xxx I love you all so much [[[snuggles]]]

3. i am such an individualist i refuse use standard capitalisation or punctuation… because hey who are you to tell me what rules to follow, look at me look at me im a special snowflake…

4. I8 mashj m6y keyboardf To fukc ,and dont ever tak4e 1. minutew to clean up my p-ost beforer psoting it . If y7ou ever mentioon thsi to me ,I w9ill get all pissy7 .

5. Writing in short, portentous sentences.

And paragraphs.

As if your words have significant import.

Like Hemingway.

Only without talent.

If you can get people to ignore the fact that the post of **Ascenray** ’s which **Revenant Threshold** responded to was 14 lines (not including a third party quotation) while the one you responded to just now is _four_ lines, that will be a _brilliant_ debating point.

I may be imagining this but… did the practice of quoting ENTIRE posts when responding to them\* greatly increase within the last 2 years or so (more or less)? If not, then I must have suddenly become over-sensitive to the practice because it drives me up the wall. ISTM that folks used to be pretty careful about avoiding that.

Guilty as charged. I wish I could be more concise–I try, but I don’t seem too good at that.

Oh… and how about when people make several short posts in a row responding to various other posts right as they read them? I do that too;\* and I’m doing it right now. I’m afraid I’ll just have to plead “ADHD idiot” here. I simply can not keep a response or my thoughts in general in my brain long enough to read through an entire thread before responding to a point made near the beginning.

I think I’m protected by the ADA however, so tell it to the judge! 😉

- And although both my parents were English professors, I’m never quite sure when to use a semi-colon. That’s why I use a lot of ellipses and em-dashes instead.

Seconded. The enter key does not make the point meaningful.

I’ve mentioned this before, but I hate the Listbots. A Listbot is a person when asked about a specific topic, lists 10-30 items with no commentary.

This is especially common in Cafe Society, where we often have threads asking (for example) “What is your favorite High School movie?”, and Listbot goes into action with the following:

> [@](#):
>
> Risky Business
> Fast Times at Ridgemont High
> Blackboard Jungle
> Pretty in Pink
> The Breakfast Club
> Porky’s
> American Pie
> Superbad
> Weird Science
> Dazed and Confused
> …

With no discussion as to why (or _how_, for that matter) all these movies are the Listbots “favorite”.

I’ll fourth or fifth or whatever being in favor of breaking up quotes into parts and responding in turn to each. It makes it clearer what your responding to and discourages the urge to summarize your interlocutor’s arguments incorrectly. Obviously it can be over done, but people on this board anyways don’t seem to do so.

Every once in a while we have a poster that posts with
really weird line breaks. I think they’re writing their
posts in another application and then copying and
pasting into the browser, but I can’t imagine why.

Anyhoo, its kinda annoying, mainly because on the first
pass my brain tries to parse it as song lyrics or poetry.

Also, stories that go like this:

My friend, J, got into a fight with K. K had earlier that day said to Q that she was
mad at J because she thinks J went out to lunch with R and didn’t call her on purpose.
What do you think I should do? Should I call J? Should I tell K to suck it up? Should I arrange
a meeting between K and R? Should I have sex with L?

These stories are usually complicated enough to begin with but for the love of god, at least give the characters names. It’s twice as hard to follow when I’m just working with letters. Also, I demonstrated another annoyance. It makes me batty when people shorten the lines. It makes the post much harder to read. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m used to reading all the way across and this creates a different cadence or what, but it’s kind of annoying. I’m also not sure why people do it.

ETA, I didn’t see Simplicio’s post when I did this. In fact, I checked to see if it was a simulpost, but I don’t think I was working on this for over 10 minutes. I guess I just missed it.

Too case and context dependent to make a real rule. Sometimes, it’s annoying. Other times, it’s a blessed relief!

BTW, orange juice should have pulp. Strained o.j. is undrinkable.

I used to do that here-in my case it was due to Usenet training, as in if you didn’t put in hard returns, the message would scroll off to the right, forever, on some browsers at least, ensuring that all sorts of ire would be directed your way.

I forgot to mention my real pet peeve (related to the indiscriminate block quoting mentioned in the OP): someone who adds a one line response to a picture, or even worse a series of pictures. Invariably they’re only commenting on one of them, but can’t be arsed to edit out the others. Wastes all sorts of bandwidth, esp. when several people in a row do it.

Since we’re now talking about stuff off the SDMB, I saw the following comment on Facebook the other day. Why why why?

Friend’s status: I’ve just found a recipe for caramel fudge brownies. Looks challenging but I’m going to give it a try.
