Yookeroo, “just like baseball”? How can that possibly be? There are more than a few baseball teams that can never ever win because they don’t have money. Money doesn’t make you good, but no team without it is ever going to win the World Series.
OTOH, teams in the NFL suck because they have bad players, bad coaching, bad management, etc., NOT because they don’t have enough money.
Every team has money. Some just choose to keep payroll low (and collect their revenue sharing gift). And check the standings, teams with low payrolls can compete (Oakland, Minnesota, Montreal). The competitive balance problem is more owners’ propaganda than reality.
By my count, there is exactly one: the Montreal Expos. No other team has any excuse. And Montreal’s a financial disaster because of its own mismanagement.
If the so-called small markets can’t compete, how did Cleveland win its division six times in seven years?
That’s it? Come on, RickJay, I’ve been waiting days for you to find your way into this thread; you’ve been far and away the most insightful SDMB poster on the subject of baseball, and particularly the business of baseball, for a long time now, and I was hoping you’d weigh in with your current take on things.
