I just heard an ad on the radio about how “every man loves tools” and how their products would make the ideal gift for any father. This got me thinking about my husband and how he would react if I gave him an orbital sander or whatever for Father’s Day. He would probably say “uh… well… thanks?” and never, ever use it. He isn’t a “tool” kind of guy.

Me, on the other hand… Give me a router attachment for my Dremel, or splurge and get me a table saw :::drool::: for Mother’s Day and I’d be hopping all over the room with excitement. If, on the other hand, you gave me a diamond heart pendant or a (gag) tennis bracelet, I’d say “uh… well… thanks?” and never, ever wear it.

Am I the only one?

Nope, I LOVE tools! Of course, I wouldn’t refuse jewelry, either…

There was a movie called Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex in which Woody Allen and Louise Lasser are on a bed and about to try out a new corded vibrator and he turns it on and it begins to hum and then to shake violently and smoke starts comming out and then sparks begin to fly and pretty soon flames are shooting out the tip, all while a frigid, timid and absolutely mortified Lasser looks on in disbelief.

That scene probably did as much to damage female/power tool relations as any in the past 30 years, with the possible exception of a few scenes in Mr. Mom.

Maybe you two are the only ones who were spared it’s viewing.

When I bought my first house in 1980, my dad gave me a circular saw and a drill. Still got 'em both. Still using 'em.

A few years back, my mom gave me my grandmother’s diamond ring. It’s sitting in my jewelry box, worn once in 7 years.

Does that answer your question? 😃

Nothing makes me happier than the gift of a power tool.

Drachillix told me a wonderful story about his paternal grandmother’s gift of a backhoe for Mother’s Day from her husband. I’d have driven that sucker to the mall!

I wanna backhoe! I never get anything like that!
